GERD & Heartburn Support Group
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. This is commonly due to transient or permanent changes in the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. If you are afflicted with GERD or heartburn, join the group and find support.

Does anyone else get bad trapped wind their Gerd? I also have IBS but am in so much pain from the wind which in turn makes me feel nauseous. Most of the time my reflux is under control, its just the wind. I read somewhere that people with recurrant indigestion are more likely to get trapped wind. Please let me know if anyone else gets it. Also, if you do, what do you take to relieve it?

I'm in the same position as you having been diagnosed with both IBS & GORD. I feel trapped wind is about the worst part. I take zantac, gaviscon & nexium. Also exercise helps.

I am taking Lansoprazole, domperidome and gaviscon. I went to the herbalist today who recommended charcoal tablets, slippery elm bark and ginger. Has anyone tried these? The thing that worries me about the charcoal is one of the side effects is being sick (i have a fear of being sick). My main problem is the nausea and the wind

Charcoal tablets help sometimes but ginger proved useless to me. Never tried slippery elm. I suffered a lot with sickness until I was prescribed Nexium 7 years ago. I have not been sick since. I found that when the GP changed my prescription to a generic omeprazole it was not as effective as Nexium - I now insist on it. Also keep alcohol to a minimum. Although that did not cut down the amount of wind I suffered, it does not stay trapped for as long. Hope this helps you.

Slippery Elm Bark has been known for centuries to help heal ulcerative colitis. So perhaps it could be very southing. Could also be useful with Crohn's disease. So perhaps it's worth a try.

I'm going to have to try those out. I don't have IBS, but I do have GERD and a lot of heartburn. I get wind trapped, too.

I had this problem big time a couple of yrs ago. I think mine was caused by the Aciphex (after 10 yrs) just shutting down my digestion. Couldn't get the food out of my stomach/small intestine. Things that helped me: digestive enzymes with every meal. Aloe Vera juice twice a day. Enteric coated peppermint oil. Stopping Aciphex, but this is hard and takes a long time and a plan.

I have started taking Aloe Vera. I am only taking 5ml a day at the moment but working my way up to the recommended dose of 25ml twice a day. The doc just changed my medication fro Lansoprazole to Omeprazole. I took my first Omeprazole today and have suffered all day. I can't decide whether to take the Lansoprazole of the Omeprazole tomorrow?
