GERD & Heartburn Support Group
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. This is commonly due to transient or permanent changes in the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. If you are afflicted with GERD or heartburn, join the group and find support.
All I can say for certain is that acid coming into areas where it is not meant to, can make you feel weird and pretty lousy. I wouldn't be surprised if you can have burning in less common areas. I have had burning in my back area when I have had an acid reflux flare up. There are nerves behind the esophagus and back area that might also react in some ways. I have wondered what the symptoms of a spasming esophagus can be sometimes when I haven't felt well in a flare up. My gastro says the symptoms of reflux can change. Try not to worry too much
Just stay on top of it with your doctor if it doesn't calm down.
I have also felt burning, but in my back and throat at times. It's been a slow process, but my symptoms have been reduced since following Dr. Robillard's diet tips. I have gone off my Nexium without feeling any worse than I did while I was on the drug. I was afraid to go off Nexium, but developing a small intestine bacterial infection from lowered stomach acid prompted me to try. I went to two doses of over the counter Zantac a day at first, then slowly lowered the dose to one a day, then none.
I am also reading "Why Stomach Acid is Good for You" by Jonathan Wright. You can read the reviews of the books on Amazon.com. Both are cheaper if you own a Kindle and can buy that version.
The most important thing is to educate yourself and try to keep a positive attitude. Be honest with your doctor. I thought mine would throw a fit because she is a strong advocate of Nexium. Instead, she was happy that I was doing so well when off Nexium and Zantac.
Stress only worsens the symptoms, so do whatever you can to pamper yourself and stay calm. I wish you well.
I will look up the heartburn book. Good tip!
I hop everyone feels good today!

Will look up the book and try to stop my meds tonight as I feel better and hope the scan shows nothing scary.
Take care everyone. Hugs
Good luck with your scan ! I hope it turns out fine! Most of the time these things do.
RE the meds.. I am thinking you know this but just in case.. Once you go off the meds you have to be really careful with your diet for a while until the inflammation in the esophagus etc gets better. It needs time to heal or it just continues to get aggravated and you get constant heartburn again. Do you know what I mean?
I don't have a digestional problem. I have a small hiatal hernia which causes my esophagus to dysfunction and it partially opens when it shouidn't, then I get heartburn! I am a pro on managing heartburn avoidance so I know a lot about that but I don't know anything about managing IBS without meds. It probably all comes down to diet like other digestional issues but not too sure.
I hope you keep feeling well today!
