GERD & Heartburn Support Group
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. This is commonly due to transient or permanent changes in the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. If you are afflicted with GERD or heartburn, join the group and find support.
I know that PPI's (like Omeprazole) or any treatment that effectively stops the reflux or makes your stomach contents less acidic can allow the esophagus to heal from mild damage.
But I was also under the impression that once you have Barrett's, it stays (though you can prevent it from getting worse). I thought that Barrett's was caused by esophagul cells changing into stomach lining cells to protect themselves from the acid, and once they change they don't change back.... so I am also very curious whether your mother's Barrett's esophagus was cured, or maybe she was mis-diagnosed and didn't actually have Barrett's to start with ... regardless, it's great that she's doing better now!
Thanks for your post. I am happy for her. She's slowing getting much better.
Have a great day and thanks again! :)
Once you’ve had it you definetley needs to have an EGD every two to three years, you go from having Barrett’s to a history of Barrett’s.
Hope that helps :)
