In the US, they give you what is called "conscious sedation". This is medication through an IV, but you don't have to have a tube down your throat to breathe. I just kind of went to sleep, and didn't even know it happened. Recovery takes about an hour, and then you go home.

Yeah In the US they give you a sedative through an IV and you fall asleep. I actually awoke for a few seconds when they started to put the scope in. I have an amazing gag reflex, and an amazing fight/flight response. It was only for a second though, and then I can't remember anything else. I was in recovery for about an hour, went home and slept some more and had a mild sore throat.

Well the main two options here r a throat spray or a sedative thru an iv. I have tried both. Buy I didn't fall asleep with the sedative. I was wide awake and remember everything. Plus they had only just given it to me when they started the procedure. I know I won't go ahead with it unless I am out of it. The sedative in the US must be stronger?

I just had the endo done Mon and I was given a sedative in my IV also....I remember them spraying my throat and putting the bite tube in my mouth and thats all I remember....I woke up, you could say when he was doing my seigmoidoscopy, coz I watched that part on the tv monitor..I was in recovery about 45 mins..today I have a very bad sore throat due to the fact that he had to stretch my esophagus and he said I had a tear in there....he also took a biopsy..waiting on the results from that now....

I had the IV sedation so how come I didnt fall asleep like you all did?

i do not think I was completely asleep....just very relaxed!

Sorry this is such an ordeal. I had the endo last year with the IV sedation. I was very scared too as I dont tolerate sedation well and have trouble waking up. B/c of this and my allergies they arranged an anesthesiologist to be there for the whole thing. It was much better with him doing the drugs. (not what they usually do--they usually just let the doctor do the IV)
I made an appt a few days before to talk with him --he was so busy he only had a few minutes to talk at the hospital. But I was able to ask my questions.
Maybe you can talk with the hospital or clinic a few days BEFORE the test and ask them what can be done? I am sure they can do something to help you. Let us know what you decide--good wishes and prayer.

I saw the specialist and he is going to start with a CT scan and other tests. He asked if I would be willing to try doing the endo again and I said only with a general anesthesic. He just said ok. So will just have to see
