GERD & Heartburn Support Group
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. This is commonly due to transient or permanent changes in the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. If you are afflicted with GERD or heartburn, join the group and find support.
Yup I am a perfectionist about many things and I was on a mission to learn the most about this issue that I could, so I wouldnt always have reflux. Definitely my experience with it has taught me much but I have researched it a lot as well. I have to understand everything!
Vicki, Your knowledge is getting a lot better and I am glad if I helped in some way. Even the fat in those muffins will cause a problem. Especially if they are store bought. So much fat in them. Fat needs more acid in the stomach in order to be digested. Not good. But you are figuring out a lot yourself as well. Just stick to plain low fat for a while... be really strict and you will get results and dont eat too much food at one time even if it is low fat and low acid because too much food causes too much acid again. 6 small meals a day if you can. If you really stay strict and eat chicken, veggies, sweet potatoes, oatmeal and whole wheat bread the majority of the time and no swaying from it, you will notice a bigger difference. Just keep at it and at some point you will be able to treat yourself but not until the esophagus gets time to heal or it will just keep coming back . That is why people get chronic heartburn because the esophagus never gets a chance to completely heal. I bet the cantaloupe issue is a texture thing. I find in a flare up I cant have watermelon and it is 90% water! The texture of it going past the esophagus irritates it immediately(burning again) because the esophagus is still inflammed. So I put cantaloupe in a smoothie instead in a flareup. There is an issue with certain textures that continue to irritate the esophagus. That is why smooth things help it heal more quickly. I have no doubt about it. You will find more things that surprise you. Just stay really aware of your bodies reactions to food and you will become even more aware.YOu both are doing great, just stay disciplined. Let the esophagus heal competely.
Chel666 if you can get yourself to a place where you are having a tiny bit of heartburn, Christmas will be easier to manage because the esophagus is almost healed. Keep at it!
I am good. I even treated myself a couple of times last weekend to a few things and no heartburn at all. You can also get to this point!
I wish you both a week of no heartburn soon! Just do the hard work.
Take care,
Lesley
Happy Holidays! you guys, Vicki.
Ya, watermelon used to give me that feeling of something stuck in the back of the throat as well. That is a more subtle symptom of reflux.
yes I have had the same issue with water. For me if water irritates it I know it is pretty inflammed. If I drink water too fast I can have an issue as well, slightly irritated. I find if I have had heartburn at night I can have more things that irritate the esophagus the next day. Once the night time thing stops it gets way better. I havent had it at night too often but I notice it makes it more challenging to heal the esophagus.
Yup, chronic gastritis must be a tough one to deal with.
Can you believe the holidays are coming so soon!
Keep having good days and keep propping yourself at night.
Lesley .
I am so glad you are doing quite well again! You sound pretty upbeat!
One day you can feel good and the next day you have reflux and it is so discouraging but just keep having more good days! It will happen!
The diet does get boring but just keep doing it! Good for you!
Oh ya, for me the holidays means snow! Yucky! But I think we will all get through it without too much heartburn!
Have a good couple of days! I hope you soon have a week of no reflux at all!
Lesley
