I never ask for advice, i'm always the one trying to give it! But I just desperately need advice right now. I'm gay. I started talking to this girl I met on an app on my phone. My friend told me about the app, and I downloaded it as a joke. Never expected in a million years to meet someone. But I did. I'm changing her name just for privacy. We'll call her Emily. Anyway, so me and Emily started talking. And it was like a match made in heaven. We were perfect for each other. Our personalities were exactly the same, we liked the same things, we could talk for hours on Skype and over the phone and there was never an awkward silence.
When we first started talking, she told me she was kind of confused about her sexuality. She had been with her boyfriend, we'll call him Robert, for almost two years. She said she didn't not like being with guys, but when she was with them, it just felt like something was missing. And when she was with girls, it just felt like everything was right. So she was sort of confused. But knew she would rather be with a girl.
Anyway, she lived about an hour and a half away from me, we were planning after Christmas to meet. My car wouldn't make it, my sister's boyfriend was going down with her to the city Emily lived in for a week for vacation. My sister said I could go with them so I could meet Emily. I told her about it and we were both extremely excited.
After about 4 weeks of talking, family issues came up with her. Extreme family issues. So she had to move back to New York to live with her dad. So now, instead of being an hour and a half away, she was now fourteen hours away. She desperately didn't want to move back, but she had no choice. We decided to keep talking. She was scared I wouldn't want to talk to her anymore because of the distance, but I, and I'm not even kidding in the slightest, I was in love with her. But I had not told her. So I told her there was no way I was going anywhere and the distance was not going to change anything between us. We both agreed to just be honest with each other. When she got to New York, it had been an extremely rough process for her. And I was completely there for her. That night she told me she loved me. And to say I was the happiest I had ever been would be an understatement. So we talked for a few weeks more. In that time, she got into a disagreement with her dad and he kicked her out. He's an ex-marine has extreme anger issues. She had no where to go, she had no choice but to move back in with her ex boyfriend, Robert- that she had been in a relationship with for two years- who offered her a place to stay with him and his mom. She avoided me a few days and when she finally told me what was wrong, she told me she had no choice but to move in with him. She thought I would stop talking to her because of it and she didn't know how to tell me. I told her I trusted her- I trust people until they give me a reason not to trust them- and she promised me nothing would happen. She had no feelings for him and she loved me. Which I believed. She would text me all the time and say how much she loved me. We had made plans to buy plane tickets to see each other until we had the money to actually move in. She was planning on moving down here to be with me. I honestly and truly believe that she felt that way.
So we kept talking for a few weeks more. And to make a long story short, she broke up with me. Telling me, she thought it would be best to take a break. She was going through an extremely rough time, which she was, she was extremely depressed because of what was going on with her family, she had no job and was living with her ex boyfriend and didn't want to live there. She told me she wanted to take a break because it would be a very long time before we could ever see each other. And because she was not herself and was extremely depressed. So we broke up. And I was heartbroken. But I decided to give her space. Since that was what she wanted.
It's been about two months since we broke things off. We've talked a few times, but it's always been me texting her and asking how she's doing. When I tell her I miss her, she doesn't text me back. Just recently, about two weeks, I deleted her number. I was tired of being the only one to make an effort and I was tired of making myself look like a fool. So I deleted her number so I couldn't text her anymore. I was actually starting to feel better again. Then four days ago, February 16, which was two days after Valentines day, I get a text message from her. The first text message I have gotten from her since she broke things off. It said "Happy late Valentines Day, I hope you're doin' alright." We talked for about an hour, just about work and how we were both doing. I was happy, this is what I wanted. I want to be with her more than anything. So I was happy that she had actually texted me first. And she was making conversation. We said goodnight cause she had to work early the next morning.
So I got home from work, went to creep on her Facebook, yes I'm one of those, we're not friends and her profile is private. So I went to her ex boyfriend, the one she is living with's, profile. His is somewhat public. And what do I see. They're listed as in a relationship on his profile. And his status on Saturday, which was the day before she texted me and the day after Valentines Day, was "Had an amazing Valentine's Day with my beautiful girlfriend!" and tagged her in it. I haven't talked to her since Sunday, the day she texted me.
I am just extremely confused. She had never texted me since the day she broke things off with me. And now all of a sudden she pops up and texts me "Happy late Valentines Day, I hope you're doing okay." after weeks of not talking to me. Why did she feel the need to text me if she's with him? I'm just extremely confused. I don't know what to think of it. I'm still extremely in love with her and want to be with her more than anything. I want to believe she texted me because she misses me, but if she's in a relationship with him, why was she even thinking about me? Much less texting me?
I've run through the scenario a thousand times in my mind to try and understand it. My sister came up with a possible explanation. She said she was confused about her sexuality. But knew deep down, she was gay and wanted to be with girls. So she started talking to me and liked me, even said she was in love with me, but broke things off to try and convince herself that she wasn't gay. She even got back with her ex boyfriend to try and prove to herself even more that she isn't gay. But now that she's with him, she might have realized "well shit, I really don't like him like I should and maybe I really am gay." So that's why she texted me.
We're not sure if that's it at all, we were just trying to come up with any explanation at all. If anyone can give me any advice at all or your opinion, I would greatly GREATLY appreciate it!! Thank you so much in advance.

Sometimes, if this girl has a heart, people check up on others. I know this isn't what you may expect from advice, but although you are head over heels for this girl, she made the mistake of going back to her ex boyfriend. And I used to get excited when she would text me and check up on me because I had seriously strong feelings for her, but don't let that conversation play you, because I let it happen to me and it hurts even more in the end.
I cannot explain why she texted you or what she is thinking, but maybe she needed that time to figure things out. Every one does. Don't over think her text though, if it was a mere check up to see how you were, then that's that.
Your sister's scenario plays nicely into things, but if that was the case I think she would be talking to you more and more as the weeks pass. Unfortunately, you can't really help the situation you're in because it is all up to the girl to make her own decisions and even mistakes.
The best advice I can say is keep your head up high. Don't get bogged down on what could be the truth, and what could not be the truth, because that's a one way ticket to a complete heart break that I wouldn't want to see you go through. There are some people out there who like to play both sides of the game, and in that case she's playing with your heart and that's just not right. If she texts you again, maybe you should bring up these questions you posted and see how she answers. If she doesn't answer at all, well, you and I both know what that means. If she responds and truly answers the questions, then your sister is definitely right and thats how it is.
This probably didn't help one bit but it is the best I could do. I really hope things work out in the end!
Try to meet new people with the app that are close to your location. Things from far are usually short lasting. See what happens. People with good vibrations will attract others with good vibrations. Smile big and be happy for being you. You will attract someone you deserve.
Good luck.
