Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
I occasionally get sore back & ribs though & assumed this was just stomach nerves going crazy. Referred pain.
I have had regular heartburn in the past but rarely gastritis. They can come together but not always. Gastritis does fall under the GERD label.
The esophageal valve is down sort of below the sternum and to the left a bit. That is why you can feel the inflammation that may be there around the left rib. So it doesnt feel like heartburn in the chest it is in a different area.
Over a month or 2 my symptoms worsened until I fell off a cliff of being unable to eat or drink anything whatsoever. Lost over 28lbs quickly. The main symptoms at that point were extreme stabbing pain under my right rib, back & shoulder pain. Horrible burping. Hyperventilation & palpitations.
Gallstones was suspected. Endoscopy showed gastritis, duodenitis & duodenal ulceration likely caused by H pylori.
Had triple therapy antibiotics & omeprazole. Felt great, then slowly but surely the burping, feeling of fullness after eating crept back.
Stubbornly I still didn't want a ppi. Had Zantac for months in 2011/2012 which helped somewhat. Except thats when the stomach burning really started.
Succumbed to Lansoprazole in 2012 in addition to the Zantac. Sunshine & fluffy bunnies - felt amazing. Theres a whole load more in 2013/2014 that I won't bore you with - basically on & off a ppi.
Second endoscopy showed "H pylori aftermath" - chronic antral gastritis & scarring in duodenum.
To answer your question of what my symptoms are now... they are minimised because I mostly follow a bland, low acid diet & still take a ppi, Zantac & Gaviscon. I get burping & discomfort as food leaves my stomach likely caused by the scar tissue in my duodenum by my gallbladder duct.
Occasionally I get a bad gastritis flare up (or my ulcer scars are irritated) & the feeling of fullness (early satiety), stomach burning, epigastric bloating/spasms, but generally a month on a double dose of ppi rectifies this.
So yes, I have gastritis, but at no point have I ever had GERD or Reflux.
I appreciate your detailed explanation of your symptoms. This helps me understand what's going on a lot! I guess I thought that since I have some GERD that everyone with gastritis has it. By the way, do you get dizzy? I believe most of my wooziness is from my MS and the meds, but I've read that a lot of patients get it from gastritis too.
I have a lot of days where I eat a little bit and feel over full right away.
I'd like to know what causes this and if there is any help for it.
1) Dizziness - I get a little bit dizzy after 2 hours or so of taking my ppi. Nothing major though. Also if I have bad day of lots of trapped gas under my diaphragm I feel a bit dizzy & spacey.
2) Early satiety - It is my understanding this is caused because of the swelling & inflammation in the stomach or duodenum. ie, there is less room for food because of the swelling. It can also be a sensitivity thing - the stomach just feels fuller because of the swelling. Also if you get trapped gas in the stomach it feels full quicker.
I feel it worse when I'm having a flare up...
But also if was to accidentally eat or drink anything 'bad' (spicy or acidic) then I usually feel that sensation.
