Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

Hi,

I've been having issues since start of March with my main symptom being nausea. I do also get burning and the odd time, strong stomach pains (like heartburn but in my tummy). I started on a mild PPI called tecta. It lessened the nausea a bit but was still dealign with it constantly. So back in maybe June, we swtiched to prevacid...first once a day, and now 2x a day.

I can have a few "ok" days where I get breakthrough nausea, but it's not constant and then may eat something and I have a few bad days where i'm constantly nauesous again (or I may not even know what triggered it).

So I'm wondering if this is "normal" for us, of how it's going to be, or if my PPI isn't working well enough? My GP did mention another one called dexilant that we could try that you take once a day but it releases the meds two times.

Any thoughts if I should stick with the prevacid or try another? I just don't know how "good" we should feel having gastritis. i assume I will never be normal again (which sucks as I'm tired waking up naueaus every day).

This is what I'm worried about. My doc isn't going to keep me on Zofran forever. The nausea has been very minimal since I started taking it at night.

I tried adding Zantac to no effect. Hope someone has some ideas.

PPI's can cause nausea. They did for me. Just another side effect.

I never had a problem with ppi's but everyone is different. I know for a fact that Dexilant is a very good drug but expensive. When I am having a particular bad time with my gi issues I have the dr prescribe Dexilant for me to get me thru the hump and then I return back to my Famotodine. Maybe give it a try.....it could help you. Keep us updated plz.

Ppi are not nausea drugs, in uk they have Dom peridone also known as motilium can't you get something similar ?

In the US Dom peridone is not approved by FDA. Instead doctors would prescribe Reglan which is a really nasty drug. Dom peridone is easy to get from online Canadian pharmacies since it is freely available in Canada.

Dianne, perhaps then I will ask my GP if we can give the dexilant a try and then see which works better. Since the prevacid is working better than the tecta...maybe this will help more.

Anita...I know that PPI are not nausea meds per se BUT my main gastritis symptom is nausea and the PPI helps ease it (as does zantac but not as well). So it must be some acid imbalance or the irritation when the food hits my lining. Who knows... (I do get burning too but its the nausea that makes me feel lousy. I also have a prescription for ondansetron for the nausea, but it doesn't work so well).

I hope so lu2013 ...it doesn't hurt to give it a try.....I use famotidine and that has worked well and I also take gas-x before each meal and that has also helped me too.

Thanks Dianne. I'll speak to my GP tomorrow about giving the dexilant a try and then seeing which works better. Never thought of trying gas-x. There are so many products out there it's hard to know which one is the best.

Thanks Dianne. I spoke to my GP. I am going to finish the prevacid, which I have just under 2 weeks left, and then will try the dexilant...and see which works better. Will let you know.

for me ppi's lead to nausea, definitely. And increase my liver enzyms: the second blood test i had without any ppi's came back normal regarding ALT and AST enzyms. I still try not to take it and after one month without it's still hard to control all the time what to eat.

JunkFoodnoMore, I'm sorry that the PPIs cause worse side effects than the original problem. For me, the PPIs help ease the nauea (which I guess is related to stomach acid imbalance). Good that your levels came back normal once you stopped. Are you able to eat semi-normally or are you on a very restricted diet? I have been on PPIs since March and my GP says there is no harm so plan on continuing.

Hi lu2013, yes i'm able to eat semi-normally but loosing weight was a little scary for me. My condition seems in fact to be a combination of anxiety, stomach spams and inflammation, and, well, foods such as fried ones that take too long to pass through the stomach and require a lot of acidity. My stomach is still burning though but I prefer taking otc meds such as gaviscon which works well to calm things down. Thanks and regards

Good that you can eat (semi) normal and control it with OTC meds. For me, those aren't enough and it's a matter of finding the best PPI to help ease the constant nausea. Sounds like you're figuring out what works best for you in finding what foods to eat/avoid.

In fact I still have to take ppi because it is very efficient to calm heartburn but I take it three days and stop for let's say two weeks. I take them also when i'm out with friends and don't want to select what to eat. But yes this is a bit hard to live with and a never ending story.
