Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
My gastritis was from surgery for a ruptured appendix, followed by Naproxen taken for pain. I should also mention I've had GI issues since the early 90s, and my GI doc said I have 'motility issues.' My digestion has been wacky for years, including years of chronic diarrhea. This all set the stage, I think, for the gastritis.
Had gastritis in July, 2011, first. Was put on Carafate and Anaspaz. I also used DGL licorice, aloe vera juice (some can tolerate; some cannot), slippery elm tea, chamomile tea, and gingerroot tea (this can be too spicy for some--be careful; I started with it very weak flavored).
From the start, I ate boiled or baked chicken breasts and personally I could handle fried very lean (93%) hamburger (careful--not everyone can handle this, being fried). Plain toast and crackers are good, too, as are bananas. I sometimes baked meatballs, which worked well, too. Fish is good baked too, if plain.
Sip lots of water throughout the day! I tried to stay away from most dairy except cottage cheese and yogurt. I drank (drink) soy milk, rice milk, almond milk, or coconut milk and even make my puddings with them.
For breakfast, Cream of Wheat (farina) is good.
Mashed potatoes and boiled carrots were tops on my list. After about 2-3 months, I slowly added macaroni, canned peas, and applesauce, as well as tapioca pudding.
I would only add one food at a time--and very slowly and carefully. Sometimes it's one step forward and two back!
After about a year, I was back to pretty 'regular' eating. But---here's the big thing:
I just suffered a major setback!! It's been about a year and a half since diagnosis, so I'm both surprised and bummed. However, I think my problem is that I have fibromyalgia, as well as gastritis. When my fibro "flares," so goes the gastritis.
We are now coping with a major winter storm, and my entire body has been inflamed. I can tell the inflammation in my back is negatively affecting my stomach. I don't have the "exact" same gastritis pain, but it's similar. So, I'm now going back on the 'very careful' basic diet I started with. A real pain (literally and otherwise), but I think I will slowly again make progress.
So a word to the wise: Be careful. I'm sure there are other factors that can cause one to backslide. It's weird, since I've been fine for months, but then again the cold winter months don't agree with my body.
Also, try to eat something every few hours and don't have big meals; small meals really do help.
Hope this helps a bit! Best wishes.
I have had gastritis for the past 2yrs 9mths. After several different doctors and all the different test i was diagnose by the last doctor through an upper GI endoscopy which showed that i had gastritis and mild esophagitis. My symptoms were severe stomach pains that radiates through to my back, bleching , shortness of breath, heart palpitation, nausea and heartburn,
I was put on omerprazole for 4mths which did not help and my second visit to the doc she decide to extend the days, thats when i decide to take things into my hands. I did all the research i can and started using aloe vera capsule(soft gel), chamomile tea (twice daily), manuka honey, coconut water, a gastritis tincture and lots of water.
i also eliminate all spicy food and fruit juice ,stayed away from fried food, use lot of garlic and
whole grains. I started this change about a 9mths ago, went back for another endoscopy which showed that my gastritis is healed and there is just some residue of the esophagitis. I knew there were changes before because i was able to eat all my regular foods again even though im very cautious. i can still feel a slight grazing pain sometime from the residue but im working on it.
And the manuka honey, one bottle is enough to do the trick,
hope this info is helpful to someone and best wishes to all.
Just wondering: What kind of gastritis tincture did you use?
Thanks for an awesome post and taking the time to share. Best wishes.
I was diagnosed with gastritis in Aug 2012... Let me first say that I am a bit of a sissy or softy . Do not handle pain very well. Anyway they put me on prilosec for a month or so .... It did not work , so I went the natural route and had to give up a lot of food and drinks as you would know. But because I'm such a ninny I stuck to the routine like glue. And with a LOT of prayer from supporting people and myself I am through the worst. I still get little twitch now and again , and I still have not introduced all foods back into my diet. But i dont have to see the homeopath anymore, and I am on my last round of natural meds. I still eat lots of mashed potatoes and mashed pumpkin etc and still drinking water .... also chicken is favorable to my stomach... please hang in there ....
When not having a flare - I can pretty much eat and drink what I like (within reason) - as long as I continue taking the PPIs. During a flare-up - not so much..........
My GI Dr doesn't know why my pyloric valve is allowing so much bile to flow backwards into my stomach. I specifically asked if the lower gastritis spot was NEAR that valve and he said no. Sometimes you can have irritation near the valve and it won't close completely due to swelling. Then you get bile reflux and gastritis from the bile eating away at your stomach.
I took Prilosec for 4 years and Carafate for two. It didn't help at all so I stopped them completely. I only take slippery elm now and Sudafed. I don't know how it works but the Sudafed makes my stomach pain a lot less. I know it reduces inflammation in your sinuses so it must in your stomach too?! I chew sugarfree bubble gum when the flare ups get bad and it eases my discomfort by increasing my saliva.
I eat all foods but have had to eliminate:
*All pain meds ( I can't believe you folks can take ANY pain meds!)
*All vitamins + calcium supplements (excluding iron and B12. I still take them when my feet get tingly. About once every couple weeks? I wish I could take it more but it causes stomach pain:(
*All alcohol
*All soda pop
* All juices
*Anything with citric acid
*Anything with mint
*Black tea and green tea
*Chlorinated city water
I wish I had gotten a 2nd opinion in the 3rd or 4th year. I've read there is a surgery that can repair the pyloric valve but it has bad success rates- only 50% are cured. Still, I would gladly do the surgery knowing those odds. Now, we no longer have health insurance and I'm sure I can't afford a GI scope without it! Or pyloric valve surgery!

Some relief from ginger caps and milk products. Take Nexium.
My symptoms started in March with constant nausea...and that for the most part, has been my main symptom. Sometimes I do get the burning and a general tightness or discomfort, but really nausea is what I deal with.
I have SI joint arthritis (sacroiliitis) and It's suspected that the Celebrex cause my gastritis. Also, I knew it was a big no-no, but a couple times I took ibuprofen on top of the Celebrex when I had very strong migraines. I'm sure that pushed things and caused my issues.
I started with tecta once a day but was still dealing with nausea, so we recently switched to prevacid...first once a day and now 2x a day. When on once a day, I also took zantac but have stopped that now, but do take tums.
For diet, I stick to simple diet of bread/toast, veggie burger seems ok, baked fish, yogurt, apples, bananas, almond/soy or regular milk. I avoid tomato/sauce, citrus, spice, garlic, fried foods, BUT do still have one cup of coffee in the morning (used to have more), and treat myself in moderation to chocolate and sweets (can't give up everything).
Am still dealing with constant nausea though with some days better than others.
DGL licorice (don't think it odes anything)
slippery elm (think it does help...but not around medication time)
a tea that helps with functional dyspepsia
ginger candy (don't think it helps but tastes good)
32 yr old Female - Diagnosed 1 1/2 yrs ago after suffering for a year with mixed symptoms, all started after giving birth to my baby girl, nhs failed to tell me i had gallstones, after a yr suffering awful stomach attacks, vomited dark blood, i was finaly rushed in A+E with an erupted Gallbladder, which was surgicaly removed, lots of bile was in my stomach, and afterwards my pain and attacks continued, so may have had to Gastritis longer or right after my pregnancy, finaly had the endoscopy which showed i had gastritis.
Daily Meds - Omeprazole
licurice root twice a day
Aloe Vera Juice twice a day
Fresh Ginger Root Daily
I feel all the above have helped, but have to be kept up, i went 6 months without any flare ups, almost thought i was cured, until i was diagnosed with pleurisy, stopped using my ecig, came into a lot of stress moving house, and flared up again, the licurice root is only to reduce the bile which does work, because it stopped my problems at night, i was able to lay flat instead of being propped up by cushions to prevent an attack.
Im fine with foods dont eat anything fried, eat only brown breads, rice and pastas, wraps, i have a large glass of juiced fruit and veg every day, plenty of protein foods when extra hungry, to reduce weight gain, will be using Manuka honey too.
I've heard of coconut water (and take it, or aloe vera juice with dinner), but didn't know that coconut milk helps too.
Hope things improve and you get some good advice on the 14th
