Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

PPI no longer working

I have been taking 40mg of Nexium since my first bout of Gastritis back in 2010. I was also told I had GERD. I recently had to have a small course of NSAIDS and iron supplements and was told I would be ok as I was already taking the PPI. What utter rubbish!! I know have Gastritis again! I am wondering if the Nexium is able to heal me as I think my body is used to it. I find it doesn't really take away the burning but then I don't think it did with my Gastritis before. Even when I was just taking it for acid reflux I still got break through reflux. Do you think I need to change my PPI? I have taken Omeprazole and lansoprazole before and they didn't really help. Was thinking maybe protanix (pantoprazole)? But isn't nexium meant to be the strongest? My GP won't let me double the dose as 40mg is the highest dose allowed in the UK.

Every medication works differently for each person. The medicine may be ineffective for you personally, may not have been in your system long enough to make a difference yet, may have been in your system too long or possibly may need another booster by combining it with a coating medication, etc. Ask your doctor. If you feel they give you an incomplete answer, ask more questions. Be your own best advocate for your body and you will get through this. Remember, every day, you are a day closer to getting this all straightened out. Even when we take steps backward in the healing process, we are still healing. And more important than anything, remember to keep breathing. I hope you find something that works for you soon.

Hello,sorry to hear that the old Gastritis is back. I'm currently under Dr Haidry of University college hospital London and he has me on Nexium 40 mg twice a day. Ranitidine 300mg before bed and sucralfate 1000mg twice a day.This is for my grade C Oesophagitis,gastritis and Duodenitis.I also have a hiatus hernia.
If have not been scoped for a while I suggest you get scoped.
I have had a virtual colons-copy done privately in Harley Street and they also scan all your internals with the latest 640 CT slice machine(there are only two in the country of these machines)1125 and worth every penny.I also had a small bowel MRI and an OGD endoscopy.I did all this as I'm now 48 and have always had a bad stomach ie acid reflax,IBS and wind,burping etc.
I think the nexium is working but I've only been on it since early october. So if you have not had an OGD for a while maybe get one.
