Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

If this post should help just a single person suffering from this god awful illness it was worth writing it. My story is about how powerful the mind/gut relationship truly is. Close to 15 months ago, I began to experience nausea and excessive belching. This carried on for two weeks before I finally made an appointment with my primary. Long story short, I tested positive for H-Pylori. She decided that I most likely had an ulcer as a result. The standard protocol of being on two different antibiotics and a acid suppressant for 10 days was ordered. All I can say is I survived barely that ordeal. The doctor warned me it would bad, but nothing could have prepared me for that torture. Fast forward two weeks past the last of those 10 days to find myself not better but worse. I was referred to a GI doctor for continued treatment. While I was waiting the month to get in, I was barely able to function. I had dropped a ton of weight from not being able to eat from the severe nausea and the burning pain in my stomach. I finally got in to see the specialist. In short, he put me on a PPI and sent me on my way. One month later I was back in his office unchanged in symptoms. I was then scheduled for endescopy that wouldn't take place for two veryyyyyyyy long months. Two months is a long time to ask Dr. Google questions I assure you. When it was time for the procedure, I had already prepaired myself for the big C word even though I knew the odds were astronomical. The chances of a 36 year old having stomach cancer was almost zero. I had a pre-procedure appointment with the GI doctor. Just for reassurance really, I asked him should I be worried about cancer at my age. I kid you not, he spouts off "I've seen it many times even at your young age if we are talking worse case". Lol! So that just fed the fire to finish my will. Procedure day came and went. Turned out no tumors were found thank god. The scope biopsies showed mild to moderate inflammation in the stomach (gastritis) and furrows/inflammation in my throat. The throat inflammation turned out to be Eosinophillic Esophagitis (EOE). Which turns out to be very very rare. Lol. It's basically white blood cells coming to ones throats rescue due to an allergic response. From that point on all the doctor wanted to talk about and treat was that disease. It can basically narrow your throat to such a degree food can get impacted. The allergen is typically food based. I went through all the testing to find out I had a minor patch positive test for corn and soy. When I say minor I mean minor. The allergy doctor said "well maybe that is a bump" I kid you not after having it taped to my back for 72 hours. Never once had that disease caused me any symptoms to this day knock on wood. All I cared about was the unbelievable amount of pain and nausea I was in from the gastritis day in and day out. The PPI's I was on didn't seem to do anything to lesson those symptoms (tried three different ones). I took it upon myself to get educated in how to heal my stomach. I devoured story after story on the forms to see what has worked for some. I've tried everything from apple cider vinegar to bone broth and everything in between. Nothing worked. Nothing changed/lessened my symptoms. The more I tried to "fix myself" the worse I felt. By this point I had developed a pretty sizeable health anxiety disorder. Any little new symptom I was back on Dr. Google trying to diagnose myself with such things as low B12 gastritis, etc. I would then chase those list of symptoms until I could debunk them or say I found the answer. None of the additional tests such as a B12 blood test came of anything. More and more the despair sunk in that maybe I would never get better. One day I just decided to stop looking and start trying to live my life as best I can. No matter how bad I felt I would start to go out more with my friends. It was all an act at the beginning as I was dying inside. I was on such a restricted diet there was not much at a sports bar I could eat and forget about a beer. But slowly month by month I started to feel a little better. Not big steps but baby ones. I might have one good day and three bad ones for example. That went on until I would say I was almost 95% better. So much better in fact I started to eat whatever I wanted and drink alcohol a few times. That was by and far the stupidest thing that I could have done. That one night of two liquor drinks set me back to square one. Talk about a deflating moment in my life. At the time I had no clue how long it would take to heal it back to the level it was. Turned out it was many many months of being very strict on my diet. It did heal though. So much so that I wanted to be normal like everyone else again and decided if I couldn't have liquor, I would stick to red wine. I began to eat whatever I wanted again and have the occasional glass of wine. I never experienced a huge regression like I did with the liquor, but my stomach would never completely heal. It was like it reached a certain point and just refused to finish the other 5 to 10 percent. My GI doctor told me the food I ate had nothing to do with my stomach healing or not healing. This went on for another 4 or 5 months maybe of not feeling normal but not feeling bad either. I finally talked the GI doctor into performing another endoscopy. Best case I thought was that he would find a few patches of inflammation here and there. Not the entire stomach like the first one I hoped. Shocked would be an understatement when I got the report and talked to the doctor. My stomach/throat is completely normal. His exact word was "perfect" to be exact. Everything is completely healed. Here is where the gut/brain connection comes into play I believe and so does the doctor. I have been so preoccupied and stressed over this disease that I've been (brain) causing my stomach these continued pains and not the gastritis. I've proof now that just because your stomach is still off, that does not mean it hasn't healed. My advice if you need the reassurance that your hard work has either healed your stomach or is on the mend from your first endoscopy, have your doctor schedule a second. Yes it cost me not an insignificant amount of money. But that is what I needed for my health anxiety to calm down. God knows how long I would have worried myself into stomach pain wondering if my stomach was worse or better. Remember a lot of people do not even have symptoms with chronic gastritis. PPI's can mask what is going on in there. I want to say please don't give up for those that have been suffering for a long time. It took me 15 very very very long months to come this far. You can heal your stomach. It just takes time and a little sacrifice. For example, I know I will never again be able to drink hard liquor. I so that is a small price to pay to have ones life back. I wish you all the best in your own journeys.
I had endoscopy and biopsy both but they did not told me the reason. But I feel it's because of alcohol. I am not drinking at all and I quit smoking 2 weeks before.
And I can really feel the difference after quitting cigarette. At least m not inflaming my stocmach due to it. Currently m taking omeprazol and carafate and my doctor told it may take 8 weeks to cure after medication started. 1 month is going to over this Friday. Hoping for the best but I feel very depressed because I am not able to live a normal life :(
Did you take PPIs during these 15 months?
How "off" does your stomach still feels? A bit sensitive I guess? I'm sure it will go away if you remain strict with the diet. The safest thing to do with gastritis is to be careful even long after you feel healed.
do esophagus takes more time to heal them stocmach ?? Please answer
