Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
I was taking Prilosec for a while and then it stopped working and I got a lot worse. Zantac better not have the same effect!! My stomach still feels "acidy" sometimes since I started the Zantac. Should I just take Tums when this happens?
Thank you!
Caleigh :)
What's Lansoprazole? What does it do? I don't want to have to take too many different medicines. Is that the only way to heal?
Thank you!
Caleigh :)
As you can probably see it takes a lot (months) of trial & error to find the right combination of diet & medication/supplements because different things work better for different people.
For me a ppi (Nexium or Prevacid) in the morning (1 hour before breakfast) & 300mg Zantac in the evening means I have little or no pain if I stick to my low acid diet. It means 99% of the time I live a normal, active happy life now.
For TooMuchPho it was Dexilant that worked... For Shihonage it is Pepcid & PepZin GI...
You should see your Doctor for more guidance on medication options rather than trying to understand all this on your own. I'm sure they could give you something specifically for the nausea too.
and I know people will be at my door with pitchforks and torches about this, but you really should be taking prescription ppi. It's real medicine, and its worth feeling better! The one single thing that I have even noticed that works AT ALL, even a little bit, was nexium. I tried so many natural things..ginger..slippery elm... you name it..that REAL medicine was the only dent in this I noticed at all.
tums i found didn't work and peptol bismol will actually make your stomach worse because of some of the ingredients, don't take that.
eat crackers! pregnant women eat crackers when they are nauseous, and I found that they fill me up and keep me full for a whlie. Also make sure you eat every two and a half hours at least. and no salted crackers. eat bananas too. try boiled or microwaved eggs, those do wonders for me and i feel so nourished after i eat them.
As far as what the one guy posted towards you..about how he doesn't have the patience for you...don't let that get to you. People on here praise him so much that i think it gets to his head..the fact of the matter is that he's rude and there is no need to be rude like that. I think maybe he even sells pepzin gi or something..lol
I was on Prilosec for a while and then it stopped working and I got worse. I don't think a PPI is what's best for me. I'll give the Zantac some time to set in. How long will I have to be on this super bland diet? Just rice and oatmeal and saltines are boring.
Thank you!
Caleigh :)
as far as bland diet...i'm going on 18 months bland diet here. lost about 56 pounds.. i used to workout a lot and now i'm so weak i can barely lift a bag of chicken feed :(
I think Shihonage is giving you sensible advice about trying the Pepcid & PepZin GI combination.
As for diet, rice & toast might be awful for some people, but are fine for others. If you're serious about healing you'll have to learn to love bland foods & gradually expand by testing 1 new thing at a time. Contact soretum & ravenfish for more dietary advice & support. They were both very successful with healing & very disciplined on the diet side.
It is a big mental shift as you have to read menus etc & not think about "what appeals to me or what will taste great" instead you have to think "what will be safe for me to eat".
This x100. Especially if you're a foodie... but life goes on.
Adapt & Overcome!
Thank you all of your help! Yesterday was horrible, I could barely get out of bed I was so weak. Praying today will be better. Can you buy Nexium over the counter? I don't want to have to take too many medicines at once because I'm afraid it'll mess me up more. When it comes to food, I've been horribly nauseous the past few days so I have hardly eaten anything. What I do eat is white rice, white toast, saltines, cream of rice, oatmeal, and I went to Chinese place and got Chinese rice soup. I guess that's bland, right? I am definitely trying to stay positive!
Thank you!
Caleigh :)
No idea what would have been in your chinese soup though? Sounds risky!
Please go & see a Dr for advice about your nausea & what acid suppression you should be taking. There are anti-nausea med too.
Also Nexium should be a last resort after you've tried other meds like H2 blockers & if they don't help there are ppi's like Lansoprazole to try before Nexium.
Nexium is the most powerful ppi. It helps some people (like me), but harmed others (like Gusko). You shouldn't take it without professional advice. By professional I mean your own Doctor's advice - not conflicting advice from random anonymous sufferers on a forum.
