Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
How about if you list what you eat on a daily basis (that is, only if you want to share that and any other info, of course!), as well as what you take for gastritis. Maybe someone here will be able to relate. We all are different in our approach to this, but maybe if you'd care to share the list of what you eat and any meds, etc., something will 'click' for someone and may be able to help you.
Also, as you likely know, stress can cause problems with gastritis. I think that's sometimes worse than any of us realize, as far as a 'trigger' of gastritis pain.
We are here for you! Feel better soon.
Medication / supplements - I avoid taking any on an empty stomach. I try & take everything with meals now. Or if not with food, then with loads of water.
Oat cereal - I have to be really careful which one I choose. Oatibix & skimmed milk seems fine for me, but Ready Brek causes a lot of burning. I think it is the added vitamins in Ready Brek. Also regular porridge doesn't sit well - perhaps the large particles/fibre irritate.
Yoghurt - What yoghurt? Is is plain or fruit? I can't handle fruit yoghurts at all & can only handle Total 0% or Yeo Valley yoghurt. Yoghurts can vary enormously with their fat content & their acidity. For example I can handle the Yeo Valley regular yoghurt, but not the 'fat free' because it feels more acidic in my tummy.
Apple - far too hard & acidic for me. Do you like bananas? I eat LOADS of bananas & find them very soothing & know of lots of other people do too.
Honey - I only have this if mixed in natural yoghurt. Honey can be acidic for me on it's own.
Decaff tea - All teas irritate me at moment. Even herbal or decaff make the stomach produce more acid. I stick to tap water 99.9% of time now.
Sandwich - I can't handle wheat & bread at the moment.
Cheese - Can't handle this either - fatty foods can be hard to digest.
Tuna - Can't handle this either. I'm desperate to try & incorporate more fish in my diet, but it can be hit & miss & sometimes triggers a flare up.
Baked potato - great for me too. In fact all root vegetables sit well with me - sweet potatoes, swede, carrots, parsnips etc. Butternut sqaush good too. All are well cooked so soft & I make lots of soups. I keep trying to branch out into other veg, but find root veg to be pretty much guaranteed 'safe'.
Your dinner looks good - what veg do you have? Stick to small portions of the chicken & fish as the protein is hard for the stomach to digest as it needs acid. I can't handle lamb - too fatty & fat can irritate the lining. I avoid all sauces & gravy.
Biscuits - big no no for me at the moment - hard particles & refined sugar means more acid produced.
Juice - what juice? Most juices are acidic & full of sugar. I can only handle a little coconut water.
My safe foods are pretty much oatibix & skimmed milk, bananas, natural yoghurt & a little honey, root vegetables & a little chicken or fish. Low fat cottage cheese seems ok for me too, Also some coconut cream or coconut milk in soups. I keep trying avocados, but they don't sit brilliantly at moment. I am experimenting with homemade almond milk at moment & looking promising.
I had the CT scan that you mention - it found nothing, I'm glad I had it (for peace of mind I suppose), so perhaps worth discussing with your Gastro, but believe me just stomach & intestinal inflammation can cause the awful pain & other symptoms.
It's hard to adapt to a boring strict diet, but honestly it is worth it once you find the foods that sit best for you. Yes I still need my ppi at the moment, but I know that giving my stomach lining a 'rest' is what it needs.
I think of it like having an open wound or sore on the inside. What do I want to pour onto it?
Poorlygir4l you should also try and worry less... I know it's not easy, but try and get your mind off your current situation because worrying also makes your gastritis worse. It was very freaky but my iridologist was able to link my current state of mind with my health issues!! You need to find an outlet.
Yes you have very little acid produced by taking 2 PPI's.... but a lot of what you're eating is acidic... it's a fine line to walk as you cannot rely solely on the PPI's.
One thing you may want to consider is your meds.
Sometimes I think docs tend to 'forget' (even though it's in our charts) that we are taking other meds. Personally, the fewer meds of any type I take, the better I seem to be.
I don't think our doctors always realize that all the side effects, etc. can sometimes make us worse; not better. I think sometimes they (various meds, especially if taking more than one) overload our systems. There's a place for them (to cause healing), of course, but I think the fewer meds we take, the better. Just my opinion.
I agree--stay on the bland diet, and maybe wait a while before expanding and trying anything new. It may be boring for a while, but will pay off in the long run.
Keeping busy with other things that get your attention, such as playing with pets, watching movies or old TV shows, playing board games, reading, and crafting have been helpful to me. Most of all, praying for guidance has been a priority. I often have to pray for patience, especially for the gastritis!
Best wishes and keep us posted.
I like to make smoothies with fruits and veg and my recipe book said to add 2 spoonfulls of porridge oats to it. As I am currently reducing my cholesterol I thought I would do this as I am not fond of porridge with hot milk etc (uggh actually !! lol) I put the raw oats into the blender and make the smoothies, I was ok for about 4 days, then whack, back it all came but worse, real pain and reflux from abdomen, stomach, in between ribs, felt it in the back and throat and I am still battling to get back to normality weeks later. I am sure as eggs are eggs that it was the flippin porridge. So that for me is now a swear word. You will find something in what you are eating that is not good, coz I can tell from what you have listed, when my tum was bad a lot of what you are eating would have irritated me that's for sure. And fruit juice, no way Mrs x x x
There is light at the end of the tunnel. We have all found a way on this site and you will be no different.
p.s. Hey and Tuna, swim away from that bad boy if you get any irritation from that at all (I don't allow my dog this as my homeopathic vet says not to because of the Mercury in it - so why should we eat it - makes sense really) x
I hope you find some relief, hugs x
