Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

Dumb question

So, did my small hiatal hernia cause my gastritis which caused my GERD?

Or did the gastritis (which may have been caused by H Pylori a few years ago), cause the Hiatal Hernia.

Or are the HH and the gastritis totally unrelated?

I know the GERD is from the gastritis. Just not sure if the HH was the original source of this mess. (And I have no idea what caused the HH! Possibly giving birth to 3, almost 9 pound babies I suspect.)

It's like asking which came first the chicken or the egg?!

It's all interlinked & related. Likely a combination of many factors all coexisting, aligning & colliding at the same time.

Definite possibility that having big babies contributed to the HH.

I had HORRIFIC heartburn during my pregnancies with similar big babies.

I think my gastritis caused my HH. The pain in my stomach caused me to put a lot of pressure on my abdomen and really compress my stomach. I try to be aware of when Im doing it now and not do it, and my HH has gotten a lot better. But when my gastritis was at its worst my HH was very large, most of my stomach was in my chest but I managed to get it back down using some tricks. I still have to be careful though, if I do anything strenuous or put too much pressure on my stomach I can tell its herniated again because the heartburn is non-stop.

I think the HH causes regular heartburn for many then you are prone to gastritis.

I have had repeated EGDs and other tests for erosive gastritis hiatal hernia and other things. Wonder about that scope going down into the stomach--could it cause a HH?
