Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

I'm currently on Protonix 40mg and I'm taking a bunch of things, including slippery elm and DGL. They claim slippery elm could interact with other medications so you're supposed to only take it 2 hours after/before taking them. However, I can't find anything similar for DGL. Has anyone tried taking both a PPI half an hour before breakfast, as indicated, and DGL at the same time so that you "doubly" protect your stomach from breakfast?

Hi John,

I don;t have an answer - but just to provide support: I think the reason they say Sl. Elm "interacts" is that by coating the stomach, it might hinder the PPI from being absorbed. I don;t think DGL coats the stomach as much, so I doubt it would have a similar effect. Just my two cents.

I actually wouldn't recommend this. I started taking pantoprazole half an hour before breakfast along with DGL. I tried this for 2 days and had the worst stomach swell I've experienced. It was visibly swollen and it took me like 2 days to go back to normal.

So if you're reading this, don't try it. DGL before lunch/dinner is enough.
