Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

I don,t normally eat sweets or mints but I used to have strawberry chewing gum. I think the gum gave me pain but not sure if it was that so I just happened to find these small mints in a supermarket. I have took them over the last two days and got pain back again really bad. I don,t know if it is the mints which I think is spearmint. I would not touch peppermint as I know that is strong. I just can,t say its the mint that has caused my flare up. What are your experiences with them? Thanks.

pootlygirl, i was told to drink peppermint tea by my doc but it tasted horrible so i tried peppermint cordial diluted with water & it really helped any trapped gas came up & symptoms eased give it a try also flat pepsi max was good as well

Peppermint tea should be fine. I've been drinking it for ages now. Make it weak to start and see how you go.

I don,t know if I should have peppermint as I get reflux and it can aggravate it. Im so sick of all this pain and the reflux I feel as though it will never heal.

I had issues with peppermint as well. I would suggest, if possible, try a small dose, such as a sip of peppermint tea, and build up from there if it goes well. If not, for now, consider it something that personally may not sit well for you for now.

Ive tried mint gum but its so painful right now that Im not sure if its a good idea. I really like the gum but don,t know.

According to Dr Jamie Koufman (author of the low acid diet), spearmint and peppermint are triggers for gerd. I would stay away from them. The reason is that they relax the sphincter muscle that keeps the acid in the stomach.

But supposedly gums are good against stomach problems as they provoke the production of saliva which is alkaline.

Anything with mint as an ingredient will cause a problem.

I haven't tried mints since I got gastritis in 2009. But back 20 years ago, I got a raging ulcer from popping Altoid mints all day long. I have avoided them since 2009 since I knew they ate away at my stomach before.

Well Ive been chewing the mint gum and I have so much pain again that I think I will give it a miss. I really like gum too. What alternatives is there do you think? At the moment its so bad that I can,t hardly eat, its horrible. Ive had stomach problems since 2009 too Silkakc.

I had started eating fresh mint and within few days I felt great.

I stopped taking Dexilant and switched to 5-8 leaves of fresh mint before bedtime instead.

Wondering if it's the mint you want or something to just have as a treat? Maybe something like a werther's, or a strawberry candy? They don't bother me and it's nice to have a little something sweet on occasion. If it's the minty taste, then perhaps you could put it in your mouth for the taste and spit it out after a moment or two? (this from my early bariatric surgery days experience when most folks will chew and spit to get a taste of something)

Wanted to add I can drink peppermint tea if it's mixed with marshmallow root tea, and it's not hot.
