I started tracking my foods about 4 years ago. I was hard to remember and seemed like such a hassle at first. Initially, I just counted calories and did it in a notebook. And of course started weighing and measuring everything too.
In time i have swapped over to on line tracking. I did weight watchers tracker on line for about a year and a half, since have swapped to one of the many free ones. I tend to get bored, so I've bounced around a bit.

They are all great trackers, but I wish they would take the things I like from all of them and make one real good one! LOL!
There have been short periods of time over the last 4 years that I didn't track for some reason, but not for long... then I was back at it!
It was hard at first to remember or want to hassle with it, but now it is such a habit that when I do not track something right away it just feels like something is missing.
It keeps me honest. In weight watchers lots of people say "track every BLT" (meaning bite, lick, taste) and I think this is a good habit to have as sometimes its those BLT's that add up to a pound and we think why did we gain or not lose?
Lately I have gotten lax about tracking my exercise. I do exercise regularly, I just don't track it all the time... but I need to get better at that so after surgery I will have a better track record, I think this is so helpful as it allows you to look back and see what your week or month was like in relation to any weight loss or gain.
I also think journaling for our head stuff is an awesome tool as well. JJ posted on that recently. I keep a journal here on DS, but its a bunch of everything.... However, I keep a personal journal in my notebook (one of those fancy journal books) of my 'head' stuff and my therapists stuff. I believe this will be helpful for many reasons.
