Although I am very concerned and now a little panicked, it is NOT my intention to panick anyone else. I have a dear friend well she's more like a surrogate mother and she was asking for prayer today for her god daughter and once i started reading it my heart started palpitating out of control. I am trying against all odds not to leak this deter my decision - so someone please smack me and reassure me that this is just one of those rare instances. The request went as follows:

Please, I have an urgent prayer request. One of my god daughters, Katherleen Carter-Wooten had gastric by pass about 6 months ago She can no longer walk. She was in a rehabilitation center in Nashville for awhile. But since going home she has taken a turn for the worst. She is very, very depress and keep saying "all I wanted to do was to loose weight". Please, interceed on her behalf. I know that prayer changes things. She has no control over her body and body functions. I need some real prayer warriors to believe with me for her healing. Her mother is still living but is 93 years old. Even though I don't understand, I am casting this care on the Lord. I know God is able!So when you decide to laugh at someone over weight, just remeber it could be you! God bless you!

I know God is able to do all things but fail and my heart goes out to the young lady but am I wrong for being concerned about myself now after reading this?

Gastric bypass surgery is like any other surgery and there are always risks associated with surgery. That being said, I would encourage you to research, research, research to be the best informed you can be about this surgery beforehand. Yes, you will find the horror stories but you will also find many success stories of which I am one. I have had no complications after having gastric bypass on 11/1/11. Would I do it again? In a New York minute! I don't know the details about your friend's god-daughter and don't want to speculate. But she is not you - and everyone's experience is their own. Only you can make the decision to have surgery or not and you have to be comfortable with your choice. Surgical complications can happen at any time and at any hospital...we really don't have any control over those types of circumstances. All we can do is prepare ourselves for a positive outcome the best we know how to do - and the rest is up to God. Good luck with your process - hang in there, ok?

I agree with MInkmoxie. Every surgery has risks. I believe it is important to check your surgeon's complication/mortality rate.

I would also have my surgery again in a minute. It has given me back my life!

I am sorry about your friend's goddaughter. You have to remember that ALL surgeries have risks. I been thru many major ones and I am still here. But you cannot base what happened to someone else on how you will fare. A lot of ppl do not realize that some ppl who go thru this surgery or another one may have underlining problems that the doctors arent aware of. But from reading your posts thru this site, I feel that you will do extremely well. You know whats going on. So heres a BIG SMACK.. done in a kind way. Don't let this deter you from doing what you worked hard to do.

Thank you lucy and everyone else, smack received. I think I know I will be alright and I am learning to really trust my surgeon and the team at Montefiore Hospital here in the Bronx. I just cringe at the horror stories but I must be mindful to remember all the success stories that I have been privileged to share as a member of this group. Thank you all for your encouragement - weak moment over.

This is so sad & upsetting. I will keep her in my prayers. Like I told someone in another post. Don't let fear stop you from having this surgery. I was a little afraid, but I also said I want to do this and I prayed and told the Lord I was giving it over to him and I knew He was going to bring me through safely. Which He did & He will for you too.

I think you replied to one of my posts about fear, and I will echo you...don't let your fears stall you. Do you research, ask your questions and know your risk category, KNowledge is power, and once you have power you can do anything!

Thanks Mellow, Mama and Loser - I am okay for now it just sent me into a mini tailspin but to God be the Glory I've landed back safely on my feet. Like you all, I will keep her in prayer. Loser way to go in serving me my words back, nice touch and it is much appreciated. Blessings to all.

Prayers for your friends recovery and for strength for you. You've done your research and made a decision that is the best for your health. At our age we've all heard of someone who has had a bad outcome from all types of procedures and surgeries no matter how minor. Surgery has its risks of course but you need to concentrate on all of us that made it through surgery with no complications. You will do just fine.

Adding my prayers to yours for this person who's had such terrible complications. I agree with others here as well that all surgeries have risks. Even with minor procedures that I've had, I've always appreciated people's prayers. Another point that I'd make is that many people underestimate the risks to their well-being from being obese. I think it's because the health affects creep up on you.

I'll hold you up in prayer too for your decision and for your well-being.

I am so sorry that you and your friend are going through such a terrible time. My prayers and love are coming your way and hers. I know it is scary when these things happen and seem to be related to the surgery, but it is also important to understand, as I think you do, that sometimes there are many physical problems that arise from weight and sometimes they will pop up if your body is just too weak or stressed to avoid them. It may be possible that unfortunately, this wonderful person is suffering from complications due to having the excess weight on her for an extended period of time. I hope and pray that she will recover. Be kind to yourself in the end, you have to do what is best for you. I know it is a scary decision. It takes time to decide what will be right for you. The surgery works, but there are risks. There are some bad outcomes, but for me personally, it has been an amazing and life changing journey. I am down over 120 pounds and able to do so much. I am no longer a slave to food. Everyone has different reasons and experiences with the surgery, but if you are confident in your surgeon, have done your research and found the best, qualified and experienced dr to take care of you... than you have the best chance of doing fine. In the end you will have to follow your heart. Best of luck.

Ditto what everyone else said about risks of surgery and consequences of obesity. You are right to consider all the risks and benefits and in the end you will do great!!! I will pray for your friend's relative and for you to find peace with your decision :) Kathy

I will also say a prayer.
The surgery decision is so big, but if you do your homework and check the success rates for YOUR surgeon it should help.
