I want to get ready as much as I possibly can before surgery and one of my concerns is steps. I don't sleep on the main floor now but there is a bedroom on it. Are steps an issue? Should I plan to make the main floor bedroom my room temporarily after surgery?

I don't think steps will be an issue unless this will be your main place to rest during the day.
May want to stay downstairs for first couple days, but then you should be fine.

The pain really isn't too bad after a couple of days. I don't think you will have a problem with steps.

Everyone is a bit different but steps weren't an issue for me. I have steep steps to the basement. I could go down there but for the first 2 weekscouldn't lift the wood to fill the stove.

Listen to them when they give you a lift limit. I felt too good right away and did too much. Made myself sore.

I was not warned away from stairs, and I don't think I would have had a problem with them (I was living in a single storey home.)

Steps were hard for me because I was in a lot if pain. But I just took it slow and it was ok.

I did stairs fine, I just went slow. The gas pain was bar far the worst for me, and walking and even doing the stairs actually helped me.

I don't think steps would have been an issue for me.

I live in a 3 story walk up the only real pain I had was gas so once that was taken care of with my trusty gas x it was cake. I also had a senior dog suffering from Alzheimer's at the time so we did those flights often. check with your doctor though they may have thoughts on it your first few days. Just my 2 cents here do not baby yourself to much. treat your self appropriately you are having a major procedure but it does not mean you need a crib and binky.

I came home 2 days after my surgery & had no problem with steps....Good luck with your surgery

Thanks much for your various comments. I think I will do a wait and see instead of setting up the 1st floor room right away. I may not need it.

you should really check with your surgeon he may have specifics of what he wants you doing or not doing regardless.

I had an OT (occupational therapist) visit me in the hospital. She recommended taking steps slowly and to have my husband follow behind me to make sure I was steady on my feet. i think she was being cautious and conservative, because I did fine going up and down stairs.

I slept in the recliner my first 5 days home because I wasn't comfortable laying in my bed. I wasn't in pain but it was hard to get comfortable.
