Hello all~
So, December of 2011 I had a total knee replacement... I healed well and was back to hiking the butte and such. Got back quite a bit, tho not all, of my range of motion...
Then last fall when my thyroid tanked and I gained 40+ pounds and felt like crud... and quit exercising.... My knee lost some of its ROM and also started swelling.
I went to the ortho doc who did x-rays and said my knee looked good. That my extra pounds is causing the surrounding tissue to be unhappy and painful, but my knee is good.
As for ROM he said that he could do an operation that basically took my knee apart (again!) and some other stuff that had about a 50/50 chance of helping with the ROM.... I think I'll pass! :) :)
He sent me home with a torture device of sorts to put my leg in and strap down my knee to help stretch out the tendons... but I will be honest. It is a painful contraption and I do not use it...
So... what I am wondering... have any of you regained any ROM on a replaced knee post WLS?
I am hoping that somehow this will help. If nothing else, my ability to be increasingly more active and no longer having the swelling I have now will contribute to knee success... But maybe I am just dreaming!

I can honestly tell you my knee is doing 100% better since losing weight... It is doing better than the knee that was not replaced... I have started working on the bike and strengthening today and it held up very well...
I am have high hopes for much improvement as I continue to lose the weight...
Kathi... sounds like we share similar knee history :) I am looking forward to post surgery wt loss = less stress for my knee(s).
My R knee is the new one... and ever since I gained this weight last fall, my L knee has been bothering me... But I am hopeful that this will take care of itself after some more loss.
Heck, just the 18 or so I've lost recently has helped! Today was another no cane day :)
But... I'd really like to regain some range of motion. It is soooo frustrating when I am in my workout classes and I cannot do some of the stuff cause i cannot bend or straighten my dang knee all the way!
I can't wait!! I've been suffering in pain with my knees since I was 13..I had chronic dislocation of the knee caps. My spinal stenosis kicked in , in 2009, and then my surgery. The hips just started last year or so, but i'm heavier than I have ever been. I am hoping this will do the trick, and enable me to enjoy a lot more activities, that i've been dying to try!!!

I really do not want to do this until I lose weight, but I am in such terrible pain that I have trouble putting any pressure on the left knee.
I am so confused what to do if they say I will need the surgery.
I have not thought of GBS or any type of surgery, as my concern is with my Leukemia which I am doing very well with. I guess I do not want to rock the boat right now.
