Last nite at support group we shared recipe stuff for part of the evening... I shared egg face (shelly's) site and WLS recipes. It was cool, the facilitator (Our NUT) pulled them up on the projector! :)

I also told everyone how great this site and the people here are so I hope some of them join soon!

The other thing that came out when we all took turn talking was that 4 people were no longer losing, and still had much to lose... 3 of these were sleevers, one RNY... All of them either said straight out they were not doing what they were suppose to, or honestly, made excuses why it didn't work for them.

Two things that I noticed from their sharing is this...
1> Again... the head work is the BIGGEST PART and without addressing it, one may/could/is? doomed for failure!! Makes me glad I have this 6 months to work on my head instead of jumping right in and fumbling the ball :)

2> From the 3 ladies who were sleevers, they all said that a few months out they can now EAT ANYTHING and this makes it hard for them to stick with it. One lady said her sleeve she thinks is made of cast iron cause she can eat anything and way too much. Another said sugar is no problem for her and she eats it... Now of course, these ladies are NOT doing what they are suppose to be doing... But, it makes me think I would do better with the RNY....?

Just stuff to ponder....

I had the lapband and will be doing revision in 2 weeks. When discussing options with my doc, she explained that the sleeve is really not much different (re: mechanism) than the band - it's restrictive. I need not only the restriction, but also the malabsorbative part. She explained the sleeve wouldn't be any different for me so I'm doing RNY. I did the band initially because I wanted to have kids and felt malabsorbative would not be good for me during pregnancy (though the docs said no worries). I now have 2 beautiful children and I'm ready for this part.

From what I understand Sleeves don't have the problem with dumping like RNY's . It is the bypass of the first six inches of the intestine in the RNY that causes dumping from sugars. That is the part of the intestine that did most of the absording and now it is not in use so when foods like sugars and carbs hit the intestine six inches lower your body is like "WHOA, I don't think so" and you dump. Some peoples bodies are much more sensitive or less sensitive, not all RNY's dump.

I have a friend who did the sleeve and she has been very successful with it. She also follows her doctor's program very closely.

And that is why I chose GNY
I'm 54 and wanted the " Golden" surgery choice as a mtg called it
Nothing against Sleeve
I just knew this was the right choice for me personally
Have my support group tonite
Subject is Meds After Surgery

When I went to the information seminar for my docs group the doc talked about the different types of surgery.... He explained that he would do whatever type of surgery the patient wanted but in his opinion he did not want to do lapband, and was finding that the sleeve was not as effective as the RNY....
He explained that when you had a surgery that could have a revision done, it tended not to work longterm.... And that you had to be very disciplined for the surgery to work.....
Needless to say, I went with the RNY..... I needed the tool that RNY provided... I needed the help that my body would most likely "dump" on sugar, and that my body would not allow me to comfortably eat all foods....
My mind is a powerful thing and controls me way too much... LOL.... It would very easily make excuses for me.....
Good luck on whatever you decide.... I know you will make the right decision.... You are doing so much research and I see your posts all the time... Keep us posted please....

The Dr also said Lapbands will no longer be done in about 2 yrs
Sleeve, no long term results yet, though sounds great for those sticking to the program:)
I had gastro paresis where my stomach stopped digesting anyway
which was another reason for GNY
Dumping Syndrome scares the crap out of me, no pun intended ;/
Keeps me honest though!!

I also want to make sure my sleeve and lap band friends know that i respect what they chose and i hear about your wonderful sucesses here on DS all the time!

We all have to choose what is right for ourselves... And thank goodness we generally get to!

After much research and thought, I think the right choice for me is RNY.

I know some very successful sleevers, but they generally lose slower than RNY. Sleevers can dump but it is more likely with RNY. Not everyone with RNY dumps.

I had RNY and am glad I made the choice. I like the combination or restriction and malabsorption. I am already allergic to NSAIDS and I am compliant with my vitamins.

Sounds like you are doing your due diligence in choosing the right surgery for you.

That's why I chose the RNY. I was looking at the lap band at first then learned all that wasn't good about them. I never seriously considered the sleeve.
I liked the double effect of the RNY in making your stomach very small and the malabsorbtion of the Y. Just sounded like it would work to me.
Still ya gots to follow the plan! I get lazy sometimes and don't too. But if you want it to work you got to follow your plan.
I figured if there was a way to mess up I'd do it and the RYN was the safest and surest plan for me.
