Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. If you are considering gastric bypass or have had it, join the community where we share our experiences and find support.
My nutritionist also told me my priorities should be protein, protein, protein, then veggies, veggies, then fruit. Notice high carb foods like tortillas, bread, rice and pasta were not on that list. :) When I asked her what I might use as a bread substitute, she suggested cucumber slices, soy crisps, or lettuce to make lettuce wraps.
I eat any kind of meat that goes down well. Deli meat was one of the first real foods I could eat. I also eat cottage cheese, other kinds of cheese, and finally I can tolerate eggs.
Reading labels really helped me overcome some ideas I had about what I did and didn't want to eat to get in all my protein. For example, once I read the label on hummus, I chose to avoid it because I would only get 1-2 grams of protein in a serving, plus lots of fat.
I'm sure other people's nutritionists have given them other guidelines as we all seem to get different advice. For example, I'm not supposed to get any of my calories from liquids (no milk or protein supplements), while others use protein drinks every day.
I've never heard anything about red grapes and peaches.
But I will share with you that the only guidelines I was given just after surgery was no more than 35 grams of fat per day, at least 60 grams of protein, and no foods with more than 2 grams of sugar. OH....and on the fat, no more than 9 grams at any one given time.
That was it. Never any mention of carbs at all. I even asked specifically about that because a lot of people on here seem to be on low carb diets. But my nut said healthy carbs are just fine (whole grain breads and cereals, rice and pasta, etc is ok - but keep in mind that I am 3 months out) The thing is...if you are making sure you get the 60 grams of protein, you don't have much room left for carbs! I like the way KGirl2 put the foods in order. Protein, veggies, fruit. I personally just need so much variety. I have to change things up all the time.
I saw my nutritionist yesterday. I'm 3 months out. She said as long as I stay under 1400 calories a day, 45 grams of fat per day and at least 60 grams of protein I would do very well. There is no way I can eat 1400 calories, tho! I would be eating all day long!
You are doing great with your weight loss!
Email your NUT and ask if what you're eating is ok. I think I will try your whole wheat tortilla, olive oil, mozz cheese dish. That sounds yummy!
For me, I had this surgery so I never had to calorie count again. I didn't want food to rule my life a moment longer, so I learnt to listen to what my boy said it needed, and I try to keep my protein intake up as and when I can, but I don't look at labels because I know that I would become obsessed by them. Use your common sense and go with the protein on your plate before anything else. When your tum says 'i'm full' then stop ! Drink plenty of water and you will not go far wrong. Please follow your dieticians advice first and foremost though. All the very best to you xxx
