Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. If you are considering gastric bypass or have had it, join the community where we share our experiences and find support.
I have gotten similar comments like "how much have you lost" but then they add "of course you had the surgery". I have started to lie - saying I'm not sure. The same when they say "how much do you want to lose in total?" I again say "I'm not sure. I just want to feel healthy." The last strange comment I had was "well, I hope you keep doing well but I hate saying that". I am like "what???" So I just say nothing back to those whose comments I'm not particularly fond of but definitely look them in the eyes! It's hard to hear but maybe that is because we would never think of saying those things!!! I think smiling is all we can do and thinking "dang, I look good!"
I don't always tell people how much I have lost to date, because quite frankly I really don't know. I made a promise to myself not to weigh myself everyday, but only once per week. So, given the day it could be a give or take a few pounds. Usually I simply respond with "I'm not totally sure" with a smile.
As for how much do I want to lose, that is really none of their business, so I usually say "enough to make me feel good and healthy".
I do socialize somewhat on Facebook, but I have not announced that I had the surgery-so many of my friends have no idea until we meet again. This is kind of fun, because next year at my 40th class reunion not many people will recognize me. Then I will be smiling big! Most of those people will remember me very heavy. Won't they be in for a surprise....
I agree with everyone, practice an answer and stick with it. Just know you are doing this for your health and not for anyone else. =)
My responses...
"How much have you lost now?" - I didn't have any problems answering this one. I was an open book.
"I am so jealous of you..." - Nothing to be jealous of! It has been a lot of hard work! I'm more than happy to let you know what it takes to get the same results (assuming the person isn't morbidly obese...if they are, I'd talk about the surgery)!
"Hey, skinny bitch!" - I'm not used to being called either skinny or a bitch...but I will take that as a compliment.
Weight loss has become part of American entertainment. I frequently had people tell me they felt like they got to watch an up close and personal version of "Biggest Loser" as I shrank.
Keep your eyes on the prize...a healthy body and the ability to participate fully in life!!

Forget what they say, you rejoice in your success!!!!
Jealousy, or astonishment, whatever...it's your life, and you have done wonderfully!!
Boo
Anyway I only share things with my closest friends I even leave out mom as much as possible but being sick all the time makes it hard to hide things.
I have avoided as much as possible without being rude. I have a difficult time editing myself though so sometimes I have insulted. About a year ago one woman who cant understand its not your business asked again at the wrong time how much I had lost ....I actually started bombarding her with how much do you weigh now , how much insulin have you had to take today, are you and your new man rickin the sheets now? How much money do you make a week? my brain went to the most personal stuff I could ask. I felt bad after because I don't normally attack but I couldn't be nice about not answering that day.
Your neighbor needs to check herself. Fake people somehow do not know that you (any one) can see through them.........I don't like the I'm proud of you comment from anyone so I admire your restraint from telling her how unimportant those words from her are to the core of who you are. You are doing great just seeing the emotional stuff that needs work is a huge step forward.
From my previous wt loss adventures.... I'm pretty much an open book. But then, I tend to be an open book on just about anything! LOL!
Pickle, I do hope you find what works for you!
