I chose the RNY because it has been done longer and there are more studies regarding that surgery. The sleeve is relatively new and there has not been enough time to do as much research in it. I did not chose lap band because I personally know lots of people have had it and I don't know anyone who has been successful with it. I know there are people that are successful with the lap band but I just don't know them.

Also I had high blood pressure, borderline diabetes and thyroid disease. My surgeon said that the RNY would be best for those health issues. I am very happy with my choice.

Which way are you leaning?

I had VSG on Sept. 6 2012 and I am happy with my choice & decision. I have shed a total of 61 lbs so far & have had no complications or issues thank God. I chose the sleeve because frankly RNY scared the heck out of me. For ME RNY was too drastic and I didn't want the surgeon going in there re-arranging my insides. After going through the classes & talking to the doctors, nurses, & bariatric staff I was confident & comfortable with having the sleeve. Ultimately you have to do what you feel is the best for you & your body. I am happy with my choice & wouldn't chane a thing.

My sister in law had the lap band and even at 3 years out -- she still looks Fabulous. So therefore I was leaning toward the lap band but after much research and hearing of people gaining weight back, popping the band and the thought of leaving all that plastic tubing in my stomach -- I leaned toward the sleeve. With the RNY, I didn't want my testines moved. All in all, I knew I had to make a decision either way so on 6/5/12 I had the sleeve surgery. I am so very proud of my deicision and wouldn't change it for anything. My sleeve surgery has been a total success with NO complications or issues. Today I have lost 79 lbs and wearing a size proud size 12. This is huge for me because I was wearing a size 22. I am still losing weight weekly and will probably be in a size 10 very soon.

My choice was a no brainer. I chose the GBS because of my starting weight. As of today almost 3 months out I have lost a total of 92lbs.

I chose the sleeve. I was concerned about the malabsorption issue as I personally watched a friend spend years following her RNY getting nutritional infusions and blood transfussions. I KNOW this is not everyone's experience, it just hit close to home with me. Also, due to an abdominal surgery as a teenager, I had issues with adhesions and no issues with heartburn, so for me personally, the sleeve was the best choice. I was sleeved 9/24/12 and am down over 100#. Still losing weight and I do not get hungry. I also went in to this without additional health issues, so I didn't have to take that into consideration as some others do. As many have said, it is very personal and what works and is best for me, may not be the best for you. Continue to seek God and have peace about your decision. YOU are the one who has to adjust your life to live with it and that puts you in the best place to make that decision. Blessings!

I had the sleeve on 1/16/13. For me, I didn't like the idea of having the 'blind' stomach, and having my guts resectioned & re-routed. Also, and this is just me being weird, I didn't want it to be reversable. I know that sounds stupid, but it's true; I know myself, and I know that I NEED to make this commitment FOR LIFE, or it won't happen at all. (This really is a mental thing, and I get that, and I spoke w/my surgeon about it; he kinda chuckled, but said he understood & would recommend the sleeve over GBS for me anyway).
I also like that w/the sleeve, there's no change in the natural valves both into or out of the stomach. With gps the 'pouch' is created & the lower 'valve' is created by the surgeon. It can stretch out over time, or (VERY) occasionally (meaning not often, but the statistics are there!) it can cause an issue. With the sleeve, I got to keep all those connections intact. I also like that it's only restrictive, and doesn't have the same level of malabsorption as with gps. This means I *can* eat pretty much anything, just less of it! I like to travel internationally, and have to try new foods when 'on the road.' I didn't want to have to learn 'where's the bathroom, I need to vomit' in a bunch of foreign languages...
Again, these are just a few of the reasons that I choose the sleeve. I maybe a little bit odd w/some of them, and I accept that, lol! But, it's a personal decision; I think you should discuss it at length w/your doctor, they'll help you to make the best decision. Just remember, once the decision is made, there's no going back!

As you know I had the sleeve and am happy with my decision. 5 months out and I am almost 80lbs down. I didnt want the gastric bypass because it scares me with the whole re-routing the intestines. The sleeve was cut and dry for me. At the end of the day it depends on the person and what is best for you. I mean we can all give you advice but you have to do what suits you and your lifestyle. Just because the sleeve works for me that doesn't mean it will work for thenext person and vice versa. Good luck with deciding which one you want to do. Do a lot of research, weigh your pros and cons and don't let anyone bad or good outcome sway you in anyway. I am certain you will come up with the one that is right for you.

You have all given me much food for thought and I am going to continue on with my research. I am weighing both the sleeve and the GBS very heavily but until I have the concrete conversation with the surgeon and here the reasons for her recommendation, I won't be sure probably until right before the surgery. One minute i am sure the GBS is the one for me but then i find myself going back to my initial decision to have the sleeve. I don't have as much time as i had 5 months ago to decide and it is wearing me out that I'm still not sure. More research and conversation with Dr. V needed
