I know it must have been really hard. Although your friend sees you on Facebook, they are used to seeing you differently in person. Think of this as a good thing. You have lost so much that your appearance is changing for the better. Way to go on the weight loss!!

Sorry to hear about your friend not recognizing you. I had a similar experience; but it actually was pretty funny.

Was at church with my husband of 26 years and I guess some people hadn't seen me in a while. People actually thought that we had split up and my husband was at church with a new girlfriend.

Cracked me up!!!

At least they thought I was a "hot" new girlfriend :)

It's impressive that she didn't recognize you because you are so much thinner! I sometimes think that some of friends don't want to be friends with the new us; we threaten them.

I agree with everyone else look at this situation as a positive experience. You have changed so much that people that you were really close to don't recognize you!! I would be thrilled about it. I think this is a good thing even though we expect everyone to perceive ourselves like we see ourselves it just doesn't always work out that way. I have lost 30 # and people are saying I look different and I don't see it.

I know all of this can be an emotional roller coaster but try to look at every situation as positive in your life now. You have made so many changes and this is a good thing not an upsetting one!!

I do understand your sadness. This journey really does shake up one's life. I hope your sadness subsides and things are brighter for you soon. I have had a few relationships become strained because of my weightloss. One was a close fluffy friend for over 12 years, the other was my brother in law of over 37 years.

It seems sometimes that even though we have basically the same heart before and after any physical changes, the fact is that we DO have some personality shifts along our journey. I think the response we get from others can be partly because we subconsciously project something different than what others are used to.

I ran into our vet who is also a member of the same motorcycle club my husband and I are members of. We were talking in the grocery store when she finally said that she didn't recognize me. I was flattered, but we weren't close friends. I can imagine how hurt you were.

As far as your being emotional goes, I have not cut loose with tears through any of my journey. (Well, except for the tear up in the Walmart dressing room over a pair of size 12 jeans that fit a few months ago.). I'm just waiting for the dam to break! We can't eat away those feelings now, so get thee to the shower, turn on the water...hard...and let those cleansing tears fall!

I have tears in my eyes just reading your post and I haven't even had my surgery yet! You are the same person inside and not to be recognized must have stung, even though it was because you lost weight. I hope you feel better soon. Kathy

I had a situation like that last month. A good friend I hadn't seen since March of this year was at a dog training event and didn't know who I was. She came back over a few minutes later and was shocked at how much weight I had lost. It did feel alittle weird but we hadn't seen each other since I had lost 105 pounds!
