I wish I could eat a protein bar but my NUT says too many Total Carbs...I had a very hard time after surgery with protein shakes, I tried many. I found Unjury, Ive been able to tolerate plus to me it doesn't taste all that bad...

Yes well and I just talked w/my Dr's nurse and the bars don't have enough of the other vitamins, so they don't count! I'm so frustrated with this. She's going to call me back with some soy based recommendations.

Hi Amber: I also had a very had time with Whey protein; I think I may be allergic to it. I discussed my options with my Nut and I ended up trying and liking Brown Rice Protein and also Yellow Pea Protein. The carb count is different on these then the Whey so check carefully, but at that time I really needed to get my protein in and these two products helped me. Brown Rice Protein (Organic) I found at GNC and Yellow Pea Protein I found at my local grocery store (one of the larger chain stores); both were under $20 for a very large container.

Amber, what about the protein shakes are you having a hard time with? Premium Protein also makes a shake that is much smoother than most. You should not change to a bar or other foods for at least 2 to 3 weeks after surgery. Are you taking a multi vitamin with iron and if yes, how many per day?

Whey protein is the highest form of complete protein we can digest at the early stages of post surgery.

I'm actually 6 months post op and never had any trouble with the shakes until AFTER the surgery. I've tried premixed and powder. Premier is what I always used before. Now I can't stand any of them. Just the smell alone makes me want to vomit. Doc gave me some soy choices to try, so I'm going to give one of those a shot.

I too hated, yech, blech, gag, HATED the protein shakes too, but I was able to get my protein in with the Carnation Breakfasts and my soft foods. With the sleeve, I was able to make them with milk, but I have tried them with soy and almond milk and they tasted OK too, so that may work if you're lactose intolerant.
Between that, my soft tuna and ground chicken salads, eggs, refried beans and cheeses, I was able to easily meet my protein goals each day. Hope you can too, and save the bars for when you're OK for the harder foods.

Do you mix your protein powder with milk? You may be lactose intolerant now. It happens after surgery. Just a thought since you say you are tolerating the bars ok.

I have had a tough time with the protein powders as well. I have tried the proteins bars cant handle that hardly either. I have mixed my protein powders with milk and it results in the dumping. I mix some and try drinking a sip or two an hour and it still does it. I think about drinking it and it makes me nauseous at the thought of it. I wonder if I have become lactose intolerant. I cant even get in 15g of protein a day. it really does suck. i am going to make some sugar free jello with the unflavored unjury tonight.

I'm sure you've tried it, but if I drink the shakes very very cold (lots of ice cubes), it's more tolerable.
