I was feeling some kind of way about my surgeon not being more hands keeping in mind that she is the head of the Bariatric Department at the hospital, I felt that she just didn't have time to relate to me as a patient and hadn't made herself available to me. I've spoken with her team and have been reassured time and again that it was the norm, but I felt a little effort on her part to reassure me was necessary. I heard from other patients that other surgeons on her team were on point, caring and even called them to talk if needed. So I couldn't help feeling slighted so I called her office (big baby that I am) and expressed my concerns about a week ago. But I still hadn't heard anything - low and behold friday morning while laying in my bed sick she called me and was such a sweetheart on the phone. She apologized and said she understand my feeling disconnected to her and that she wish she had more time for her patients. We talked, she answered my questions and my faith in her has been restored. Not that I put too much stock in her lack of communication knowing how hectic schedules can be, but I am glad that she heard what I was saying enough to stop and take the time to call.

Morrow of this story: If you don't advocate or speak up for yourself, you can't expect people to respond unless of course they have a crystal ball. I am proud of myself for having the guts to say "Hey look at me, I'm over here" Now I can go into my surgery with a renewed sense of peace.
