Warning: really long.
It's a good thing I don't eat when I'm upset or depressed, in fact, probably just as bad I DON'T eat. I lose my appetite and don't feel like eating because I'm too busy in my own mind.
Let me see if I can make a long story short. On Oct 15 my daughter, her husband and baby packed up and moved from Missouri to Florida to get an apartment with their friend. They basically came with the clothes on their backs/in suitcases, about $600, a few dollars left in food stamps, no car and no jobs lined up.
Turns out their apartment won't be ready until 11/1 and they couldn't stay with their friend, so the 3 of them are staying with my boyfriend and I. The deal was they'd buy their own food, and pitch in toward the bills if they were able, because I'm broke and can't really afford to have all my bills go up and have to buy food for 3 extra people. I made this VERY clear to her and she agreed.
So they get here, immediately jump on our computers (I gave them permission so they could look for jobs) and go straight to Facebook and games. I didn't say anything right away but started hinting that they should put in as many apps as possible so they get a call back. In the first week I think he put in 1 app and she put in maybe 3 or 4. The rest of the time they sat around playing on FB, or playing on their Xbox or my Wii and screwing off in general. Not cleaning up after themselves, eating all of our food, piling dishes in the sink, garbage overflowing, not pitching in at all.
I asked them to please clean up after themselves and if it's not too much trouble take the garbage out daily. My daughter got in a snit over that, said *I* invited them to stay with us and now she has to replace the food they ate and do stuff around the house. (GOD FORBID!!) At which point I was getting pretty pissed at her ungrateful, deserving attitude (she has a HUGE sense of entitlement) and told her we were going to have a chat when I got home. She immediately changed her attitude and started being really nice to me. Anyway...
Fast forward 2 weeks.. they are out of food, out of money, still haven't really put any job apps in (though she did have a job interview this morning, so that's hopeful) and as of yesterday they weren't really motivated to go put any in. I took a day off work yesterday to drive her down to apply for WIC and had to really nag her to get her to apply for food stamps and cash assistance because she just puts everything off.
They're supposed to move into their apartment next week, but honestly its looking like that might fall through and I'm completely freaking out. I keep asking her what's going on with the apartment and she says she doesn't know, that her friend hasn't told her anything, so I'm like ASK.
I blew up at her yesterday when their cell phones got turned off for not paying the bill and told her she needed to get off her ass and get out there and get a job. I said if I were you I'd stop playing Pot Farm on FB and walk the mile up the road and put in apps at every store over there til I found a job.
I said you're out of money and food stamps, so now I have to buy that for you, and who's gonna buy diapers for the baby when she needs it? Not you, me, and I can't afford it! So you need to help me out!!
(Right after that she got pissed at me and ran out of the room. She and her husband talked and they decided to sell their Xbox to get some $, and he jumped on the computer to submit some applications (for a change). and today she's donating plasma for $ (how awful is that?))
My BF and I have been really strained since they got here, so I'm worried that this whole thing may break us up and I'm just totally losing it. I don't know what to do. This CANNOT turn into a long term thing, and I told her that, but they don't seem to be doing anything to get on their feet, they're happy just sitting around. Me, on the other hand.. I am NOT happy with them just sitting around and am becoming more and more annoyed and aggressive in my nagging.
I just asked her about the apartment and she said they're waiting for some paperwork from her friend's boss about their income, yet she hasn't spoken to her boss about seeing if they've even completed it. It's like they just don't give a shit.
I feel like I'm falling into a big pit of despair and don't know what to do to get out of it. I can't just kick them out, but I can't keep them there either. I'm completely stressed out, my nerves are shot, I'm losing sleep freaking out over this whole thing, and I totally do not want to eat.
So much for the long story short thing.. If you've made it this far, thanks for caring.. I just don't know what to do and have nobody to bounce all this off of.
Thanks for reading.

Have them sign a contract with you... actual paper... you have x amount of days till you will need to leave, detail what is required of them while they stay and then here's the hard part... close your eyes, stand firm and stick to it. Even if it means the worst case scenario happens... 9 times out of 10 they will figure something out within a day or so. I'm not a Mom but was a kid, young adult, & adult that relied on the safety net of Mom & Dad. While it was there I took full advantage of it... when it wasn't I did what I had to do... they will too ;)
On the relationship strain... you learn a lot about a person in times of adversity ;)
You sound like me... I shut down in stress... and don't eat too. Not good. Take time away... walks, drives, long baths. Take those vits, eat & drink and vent away.
Hoping brighter days coming soon,
~Michelle "Shelly"
My boyfriend has been very patient, but his mood has been a miserable one, he bitches about it to me in private, and I'm really feeling the negativity and his unhappiness, though he has told me that he can't wait for them to move into their apartment. (Honestly I can't either!) He's being very nice about everything, and not mean towards me, but if this goes long term I don't know how long he'll deal with them, or me. We've got 6 years invested in our relationship, and I don't really need this to screw it up.

BUT, that was before her barback failed to check an ID and she lost her bartender's license and the husband refused to share his income to help with the house. It went from bad to worse and finally my niece packed his clothes and said, "Pay up or Get Out!"
Tell them you will care for the child, but that they have X amount of time or "Get Out!"
They won't get serious until you do!
I sat down with my BF and told him some of the suggestions here, and I know he's hesitant to let me do anything drastic because he doesn't want her hating me and keeping the baby away from me, but he also knows that we need our house back sooner rather than later.
Now the only decision I need to make is do I do a contract or just a straight up 30 day eviction notice if they don't move out on the 1st.. I'm going to check into shelter programs and section 8 to see what can be done for them. I'll help them in the process as much as I can, though I can't do anything financially, but I'll gladly do the research and point them in the right directions.. that's about all I can do.
Thanks again.
