Isn't the divorce rate up to about 50% anyway? I don't know that it is anymore prevalent in the GBS society than anywhere else, but I havn't researched it. I know that you do have to work at it through "thick and thin."

It can add a little tension to the marrage. Both of my parents have done it and ofcourse my father did better then my mother but they are no where near splitting. Just like Onederful said we all have to work through it together through thick and thin. (Thick and thin...Now that's funny)

I don't know. My husband has been a Saint in all of this. I couldn't have asked for more of a supportive man. It's too bad - maybe the marriages weren't that strong to start with? Just a thought.

They say that strong marriages get stronger and weak marriages can get weaker. I happened to have had a weak marriage going in that I'm trying to wipe up now and make work. If he weren't so patient, we'dve never mad it work. It's so hard for us post-op, I'm one of those who are scared of splitting, mostly because my bipolar mood swings are so far outta control it's insane and my not sleeping at night hardly is taking a toll on us. Like they say: strong marriages get better, weaker ones have to fight harder to maintain and become stronger or it falls apart. GBS sure does make it harder, in my opion. I know I'm not a ray of sunshine, but I share what I live. Hopefully people don't experience what I'm experiencing.

Many Obese people will cling to who ever will allow them. To the obese person, the fact that they are allowed to cling, is a "sign" that they are "loved" This is often enough for them to agree to marriage!

I am thinking that Many of the marriages that make up this statistic, fall into this category

When the WLS person starts to get some self esteem back, then all of a sudden they find themselves with somebody Totally wrong for them! In this case it is actually both parties that will back out of the marriage.

I first read this post yesterday and couldn't answer. I have alot of opinions about this subject. I had my WLS in Nov 06, by March 07 we were separated and my divorce is now pending. It's been a hard road for me, even though I was the one who decided it was the best road for both of us. We had the weak marriage and I think the WLS just put it out there and made it complete. He was very supportive of me getting it done, but then the comments started, I want te fat girl back, I dont' mind if you gain weight. I liked her better, you are different, ok you get the gist. So anyway, I think that alot of people have said it, divorce rates are up, strong marriages are strong and weak ones can break with anything....

i worked at a hospital that did gbp and the dr. said it was near 70% post 3 years after. of course, now the divorce rate is 52%..that phrase"if u have a good marriage it will make it better and if you have bad marriage it will make it worse" is straight from satans lips..we had a good marriage until she lost 210 in 14 months and went off the deep end. my ex"s 2 sisters were gonna have it done but changed their minds. they said" we saw what it did to her and we dont want to do it anymore. i have heard countless stories regarding divorces once the person loses the weight..their ego goes straight thru the roof. i believe some chemical or hormone changes and causes mental changes. i am not trying to be mean its just my life has been ruined by her gbp. her life has been ruined also. an unplanned pregnancy at 42 years old. she lives with an alcoholic now. she used to be one of the finest christian woman and church worker i ever knew, now she wont step into a church.even her own family doesnt recognize her. all this happened after her weight loss.. i am not trying to be mean but i beleieve we would still be together if she hadnt had this.. she never tried any diet more than 3 or 4 weeks long..they pass out gbp surgeries like candy.she never had one medical problem other than overweight. no blood pressure problems, no diabetes, no blood issues. i even heard from one of her sisters say that she talked to her and said she ruined her life because of that surgery, but of course, i will never hear that from her.gastric bypass surgery does save lives but it also destroys lives..even my children were affected because i found out they got kicked oout of their christian school because she didnt pay the 7,500 tuition that i believe went for a boob job,lipo,and tummy tuck.this is the surgeries that most people will have to have once they lose the weight. then face surgeries years later..it just doesnt stop..believe me, i have seen it

The GBS doesn't destroy lives. Like others said if you are in a bad relationship before the GBS you have a higher risk of divorce. Because the partner becomes more insicure. ANd or You'r feeling more confident and if the marrage is bad you might get the courage to get out after weight loss. Before I got my surgury I talked to my husband if he was afraid I will leave him after weight loss? He is very confident that I won't leave him. No need to. I did let him know of the statistics before hand. He just wanted me to be healthier. Actuilly My marrage has goten better. I feel better about myself which makes me a better partner. He sees the younger me comming back. Not just marrages but friendships are lost after WLS. For many reasons you arn't the fat friend anymore, or the friends you do have are heavy and become jelious.
