LOL. I have been reflecting on this all week ... a pretty funny story in retrospect, and kind of illuminating on how much my life has changed from the pre-surgery me.
This past weeked I flew back to RI, where I grew up, to attend a baby shower for my best friend from childhood. She and I are both Italian girls who grew up in Italian neighborhoods with super Catholic Italian families (Eggface, girl, where are you - cuz you know where I am going with this!).
My friends family was my surrogate family as a kid, I spent a lot of time at her house ... they are super great terrific people, made even better because they actually own an Italian bakery. I didnt tell them I had surgery in November, mostly because I didnt tell many people - my decision, my life, moving on.
Anyway, the baby shower was a huge affair, complete with a sit down 4 course meal, which I boxed up and took back to my friends house ... and skipped dessert. And felt completely OK and good about.
BUT what was so funny was going to her Aunt's house for Sunday night dinner where her grandmother and mother, as most Italians are, could not stand that I had NO FOOD in front of me and wasnt really eating much of anything. Two things that werent bothering me, because I was enjoying being with the family and listening to all the Italian flying around, I just dont get that much where I live now. Anyway, I was promptly fixed a CARB LADEN plate and told MANGIA, MANGIA. Repeatedly. I just had to start laughing and telling the grandmother NO MANGIA, NO MANGIA! And laughing.
God, the pasta and fresh bakery bread and the wonderful stinky sheep cheese from Italy. It all smelled so wonderful. I would have destroyed two good plates of food before, until I was sick from eating.
Now, NO MANGIA. No regrets. It was a great weekend.

Although my family is German, transplanted to Wisconsin, it's all about the food; brats, knockwurst, kraut, apfel kuchen, spaetzle, potatoes, breads, pies and cakes of all kinds, all washed down with beer and wine.

I'm also laughing about all the different food pushing cultures mentioned in the replies...pretty funny stuff!
Your post also reminded me to be grateful that I enjoy the smell of food without feeling deprived and needing to taste it. Ive always enjoyed food-scented candles and love the smell of coffee, even though I dont like the taste. Fortunately, that has transferred to being able to enjoy the smell of pizza, etc post-surgery.
