Im trying to mentally prepare, if that is possible, for my surgery on Monday. one thing that I haven't heard too much about on here is the leak check they do after surgery. is it awful? what does it consist of? it scares me a bit.

You will do fine.. Try not to worry....

I did not have to have a leak test, but it is my understanding that it is not a big deal....

My surgeon did it while I was under anesthesia when he completed the RNY. I never knew any of it was done. I have seen a lot of people on here say their's was the next day. Again, different programs do things differently. Good luck Monday!

It's basically a barium swallow. It tastes nasty but it's doable. They will watch you swallow the barium under florouscopy and look for any leaks as the barium goes down your esophagus and into your new pouch and bypassed intestines checking for leakage at the suture lines. Mine took less than 5 minutes. Don't sweat it.

Ditto to what jjklmommy said.... The worst part is the taste of the stuff. :) Mine was done the next day. The best part is once its been reviewed I was allowed ice chips! I was thrilled! :)

Like the others said it literally takes 5 minutes. The stuff tastes gross but it isn't horrible. since you just had surgery the last thing you want to do is down this cup of stuff but you manage. It doesn't hurt at all and they monitor you for a couple minutes and boom you are done!!

I had the leak test and there's nothing scary so try not to worry. I must say they wouldn't let me drink the whole day after the surgery and by the next morning I was so ready for a sip of water I'd have done anything! :) I didn't have barium - if there is a leak (which I'm sure there won't be) the barium would be poisoness. So they give you this other stuff- it's honestly not good as far as taste but I only had to take a couple swallows. And then I was shortly cleared for water and crystal light!! Don't worry- it's fast and the payoff is so worth it!

All they did for mine was have me stand in front of a machine and drink some white stuff. It didn't taste like anything much. I was so thirsty I kinda enjoyed it. The test was nothing. No pain no discomfort at all.
