With all the upheavals, delays and countless doctor's appointments leading to today - I have to tell you if the end result is what I have seen in all of you - then I know my joy will be as immeasurable as yours and I look forward to April 9th with baited breath.
I scoped out the room today during the class and what I noticed is that there are so many different people from all walks of life who are taking control of their destiny by having this surgery. Some people who are far worse off than I am health wise and desperately clinging to this surgery to save their lives literally brought me to tears. The inability to walk without a walker, labored breathing so hard the sound filled the room, etc. - the most eye opening experience to date of how critical this surgery is to some people.
Thus far, this journey has taught me to value my life - you can't wait for any one else to be concerned about you more than you should be about yourself. Not your husband, your children, NOBODY. If given the opportunity to take control and turn things around - you should grab it.
I was always the kind of person who needed someone to hold my hand. I disliked Dr's so much I wouldn't go to the Dr's unless my husband went with me and my mama before him. For the past six months I've made my appointments and kept them all on my own. My independence during this time has heightened as well because I chose to take a stand for me and my life.
When i first told my husband I was going to do it - he shocked me and said "your own your own" my back went up and I was highly insulted not to mentioned hurt. I couldn't for the life of me understand what he was doing - all I knew was that it was cruel as hell. But now I get it - I am not on my own because he took off the thirty days to be with me during my recovery. What he needed to see just like the doctors was my own commitment to my health. Would i need him to hold my hand through the six months or would I stand up and take charge and I did it.
My reality is that life is short and tomorrow is not promised to anyone and God forbid something happens to my partner for the last 29 years - would I be able to go on and stand on my own two feet without him and today that answer is yes. I don't know if I could have said that a year ago, but each day God strengthens me. Now this is not to say that he better go anywhere anytime soon, but a huge part of this surgery for me - is conquering my fears one at a time. And stepping outside of my comfort zone is a huge deal for me.
I guess the morrow here is - This is a life choice and no matter what happens tomorrow you have to be prepared to keep up what you started. Friends will leave you and as the nurse practitioner put it today "Divorces have occurred" behind the surgery, family will act shady and the haters will hate. What will you do in the meantime and the ultimate answer is - "I will survive" because "I have to"
I read a thread about people "starring" today, let them stare. Put your head up and walk with pride - you've achieved greatness in preserving your life and unless they have walked a mile in your shoes they will never understand your journey. You share what you want to share about it and if you choose not to answer one question "YOU ARE IN CONTROL" and no one can take away what God has blessed you with.
I don't know why I am babbling on like I am, but for those of you struggling with the decision - look at where you are today and ask yourself if staying in this place is what you want or "DO YOU DARE TO DREAM" of the life God intended for YOU to have.
Love and blessings to all, Tam
