I had type 2 diabetes prior to surgery, but was not taking insulin only pills. Since leaving the hospital from my surgery on 12/12/13 the highest my sugar has been was 112. I no longer am taking any of my diabetes meds. I have a friend who was on insulin and after her surgery she had to take insulin for about a week and then she was taken off of it and no longer takes it. It will probably just depend on your body.

before my RNY I took 5 to 7 shots of insulin per day and 3 doses of Metformin. I was still way over the limit an out of control type 2 diabetic. I left the hospital after surgery taking metformin and 1 shot of Lantus per day. A month later stopped insulin. Recently I stopped taking Metformin. Now I take NO diabetic meds and my diabetic doctor declared me to be "Resolved". I had my RNY Dec 7, 2013

Yay! Thanks guys, that gives me hope

I had type 2 diabetes prior to surgery and was taking one shot a day plus medication. After surgery I was able to stop taking shots and medication. My A1c is now 5.9.

I was type II, taking metformin and insulin (Lantus) injection at bed time.

I was one of the lucky ones that left the hospital not needing any medication. My last A1C was 4.8 (normal is between 4-6) my last fasing glucose was 94. (normal is under 110). Not only was my diabetes resolved, but my high blood pressure is now a normal low, and my high cholesterol is now in normal range.

Try not to compare yourself to others and use this information to help guide you to what can happen.

Amber, I also had my surgery because of my diabetes being so out of control. I was on two meds plus a Lantus shot prior to surgery. My surgery was Nov 26, 2013 and I still take a Lantus shot daily. My fasting reading has been around 120-130. My Dr. said as my weight continues to drop so will my sugar.

Oh Yeah, I forgot. MY AC1 was in the 8 and 9 range. Last month I was 4.5!

Thanks guys! To get the diabetes under control will be a Mission Accomplished for me. I have my pre op app w/ the surgeon on Monday, then my pre op class. Hoping surgery will be within a few weeks. Thanks for all your input. This is by far the best support group I've been to.

Getting off of insulin is really the whole goal of my surgery on 1/9/14. I hope I get the good results all of you did. I am so sick of taking shots, and having to "excuse myself" to take a shot if I go out to lunch with friends. It's been embarrassing to me - especially if it's a business lunch.

SORRY Correction I had MY RNY Dec 7, 2012! I got the wrong year in there and it didn't make a lot of sense. It was over a year ago! Yes it took about a year to get off ALL the metformin.
