I wasn't scared got a lil lil nervous but felt like could defiantly do it. I was READY.

Surgery can be scary, especially if this is your first surgery. I had had a previous surgery before my RNY, so I actually had a little less fear this time around. The first time, it really helped me to have a conversation with the anesthesiologist who was going to put me under and then wake me up. That helped me because most of my fear centered around not waking up. I suggest that you talk to your surgeon and anesthesiologist about your fears. Believe me, they have heard them before! You are not alone. Hang in there. :)

My surgery is on Friday (the 25th) Im more nervous than scared....wishing my mom could be here it sucks she cant....This is my first surgery EVER so Im a bit nervous....scared maybe but more nervous than anything. :/

I was pretty scared. I had never had any type of surgery before this one. From the time I woke that morning at 400 am and got in the shower I was shaking uncontrollably. But my breathing was normal. And it may have been because of the fasting and all. And I was just so nervous and really didn't sleep much that night. Then as they were wheeling me to the operating room I did cry, but it wasn't like a sobbing cry, it was just tears. It's a big change. And you are putting your life in your surgeons hands literally as you are sleeping. It is a serious procedure so research EVERYTHING. That made me feel better. But it can be very scary and that is normal.

Thanks everybody...I have had surgery in the past including gall bladder surgery. It's not so much the operation it is the fear of control with food I've discovered today. I am out of control with food that's why I need the surgery to get my weight down and be healthier again. After you have the diet you sound like you have to be in control of everything you put in your mouth. Because I've been "Out of control" for so long it just scared me and wanted to know if it is a normal feeling. Thanks.

I can honestly say that I never once had a moment when I thought "what am I doing" I was no t scared in the least. I was excited and could not wait to start my new life.I had surgery 6 months ago and I am down 115lbs.

I was scared. It is a very major surgery (and I have had 11 surgeries in my life). There are risks to this surgery. I had this surgery so I could be healthier and live longer for my children. I was scared "what if I'm in the worst scenario numbers post op?" I think being scared means you are taking this seriously.

Debbie, I can say this only for me so I don't know if it's like this for everyone else. When it came to the food part at the very beginning it was very easy for me. I, too, was someone who was out of control when it came to food. That is why I become super morbidly obese. Portion control is something I did not have. But right after surgery I was just focusing on healing and I didn't even really think about food. I think that helped get me on the right track for the food part. So by the time the head hunger part came on I was pretty strong on my diet part. That was pretty helpful. I'm also gonna say that it wasn't 100% easy though because I did still struggle when the head hunger part did finally kick in. I would want to eat a burger and I would want ice cream and other foods when the treats that my friends and family would be eating. But my body had already acclimated to the surgery and if I even tried those things I would get sick and that also would keep me from eating those things. Sometime the thought of it would make me nauseous. Maybe it will be like that for you also. And like I said earlier. I can only speak for myself on that issue.

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being cool and 10 being wide-eyed terror, about a 15. Not of the surgery. I knew I could handle that part. I was terrified of the idea of change and hope and maybe, going through all this and still failing. One day I was positive I was totally in charge and the next day I was so positive I was making a huge mistake. There were days I wanted to cancel the whole thing. All it took was trying to walk to the mailbox on these fat girl knees for me to realize I couldn't. I want to be able to walk without crying. Bottom line - I put on my big girl panties and just shoved the fear under the bed with all the rest of the trash. I'll clean that up later.

Debbie, I'm the biggest scaredy-cat in the world but after 6 days, I already feel more in control. I'm still nervous about things but, oddly enough, they aren't the same thing scaring me before surgery.

I thought about having the surgery for about 5 years...I think I worked through most of my fear during that time. I practiced eating like I'd already had surgery and knew I could deal with stuff like never having Diet Coke again.

I was uptight as my surgery date got closer. I think it is similar to the nerves that come before giving birth to your first child...am I ready for this? What will it really be like? Etc...

I can tell you it has been worth it!

I wasn't scared at all. I was in this marvelous state of readiness and peace. I had all my affairs in order and I was very ready. I had researched everything thoroughly and had already been working ony emotional and mental food issues which are about 90-95% of this journey.
