My son DJ had his 7th open heart surgery on Oct 25th...
aortic valve replacement, his last one was almost 5 yrs ago and the valve had calcified and narrowed and was leaking, so we were hoping that this would help his heart function enough to give him some more time.
4 days later, DJ suffered a massive brain bleed and was not expected to live. He went into emergency brain surgery on Oct 28, then again on Nov 2nd. We were told things looked grim, and they didn't know if he would ever gain consciousness again, and if he did he may have massive brain damage and not be functional.
So we prayed, and we waited....
Last Friday, DJ was able to wake up and come off the ventilator successfully and breathe by himself.
I've been witness to a miracle!!!
DJ not only woke up, but he was out of PICU today and into a regular room. He's talking and joking like his old self. No memory lapse, no communication problems, no speech issues, no cognition issues. His only challenge is a little weakness on his left leg and arm. He can stand, and walk, though weakly. And his arm may take longer for him, he's moving it, but he complains that its achy and tingly. Which the rehab nurses say is an encouraging sign and that it is expected to wake back up and be fully functional again.
So its been a very rough couple of weeks, and I can't tell you how much I've cried. Every day I'm crying. But seeing his smile and having faith God will heal him, makes it all possible for me to make it to the next day.
I love you all!!! Keep DJ in your prayers, he still has a long road ahead. From a cardiac standpoint, he is doing very well, and the next weeks/months will give a better picture, but his heart is functioning the best it ever has.
