Ok, admittedly I have been going through a tough time the past two weeks and have not been eating (basically very much at all) OR taking in liquids as I should be.

But, this week I am having a really really bad time with chapped lips. They are painful, swollen and red and my mouth is cracked in the corner. I am bit concerned that this isn't just because I might be dehydrated, I am concerned that I might have something going on vitamin deficiency wise.

I've been using medicated lip balm liberally, to no effect. Today my lips actually have started to peel.

Has anyone had any experience with this? Got any advice?

If your lips are scaly, it can be a biotin deficiency.

If this is due to dehydration, peeling indicates you are REALLY dry. Other things it could indicate is C and B vitamins running low and yeast or viral infections. That's all I know of with no medical training. Maybe a call in to the doc would be a good idea.

Medical advice is key. Get yourself back on liquids and eat properly. If you go off the tracks the train does crash. Get it back on the tracks :)

I always have to take L-Lysine for my lips.

Aquaphor - this stuff is available at every drug store in America and is amazing. Like vaseline but without the grease. I was on Accutane a while back and this was recommended by my doc, and she also said it helps healing. I put it on all 6 of my lapro scars and poof - they flatten out and stay supple. I use it on lips, cuticles, soles of my feet - all purpose and cheap!

My son had that problem too while on accutain! We used neosporin but I would try the aquaphore too. It does sound like you are dehydrated. You need to eat! Why can't you? You need to get the proper nut. In your body! Call your dr! Have some blood drawn to check all your levels. Good luck and god bless!

It happened to me with too little water. I used vasoline - softer than chapstick, so it didn't tear as much. Did end up with a cold sore in one spot. Used Abreva on that. You're past the sip, sip, sip stage - so gulp, gulp, gulp and cut down on the caffine (if you drink it) while you are trying to rehydrate.

I had a similar problem a few months ago. Well, maybe two months ago. I don't know what caused it, other than the surgery. Our skin and hair takes a hit when we lose weight rapidly. I highly recommend Daily Conditioning Treatment (DCT) from Blistex. I love this stuff so much I keep it in my purse, my car, my office, my bathroom.....I buy it in bulk on Amazon....LOL.

I had a doctor tell me that the only thing that cures chapped lips is drinking more water. All the treatments just sooth the symptoms. He also said that if you use a product on your lips, make sure it has sunscreen in it! A lot of people that suffer from cold sores tend to have flair ups from sun exposure.
Everyone has had good suggestions for products for lip conditioning. I think it's all a matter of seeing what you like personally. Burt Bee's has some simple stuff that is nice, too.
