I have the 5000 mcg right now, and take 2 of them a day, am and pm. I usually buy the 10000 mcg and take those, but they were out the other day when I was shopping... some people take more!

Wow! Sounds like lots! I just bought 1000 mcg tabs. Was planning on twice a day, but maybe I should reconsider. Seems like not much documented dosage. :(

My program says 5000 mcg per day, but a lot of people take twice that. I'm 2.5 weeks post op and no hair loss yet. I'm not sure when it is supposed to start though.

Thank you for the dosage info! I just have "had it" with my hair. I'm two years out from RNY and never had any info on biotin. I assumed that what was in my bariatric vitamin was sufficient. I think I have been sadly mistaken. I'm seriously considering a "cut it all off...I'll wear a hat or a wig and start over". Got a appointment for the cut at 5 today. :(

I cut mine all off! Was thin before surgery on top... now, well just down right horrible! I won't lie... I miss my long hair, but it did no good to have it hanging down my back and NONE on the top of my head! LOL! But I am adjusting.

I was also told to NOT use conditioner (Other than a bit on the ends if needed) as it builds up on the scalp... and to use Sulfate free shampoo if you color your hair (or its curly like mine.. AND I color it!). And to massage my scalp every day to increase blood flow and to UP my protein! :)

Im with ya girl..... I am not that vain, but come on. My hair matches my face (blonde), and super thin, sometimes I feel invisible.I almost never "wash" my hair anymore. a super good rinsing and I'm good. If my hair get "too clean" wellllllllllllll can you say "toddler hair" !!!!!!! JUst empathizing with ya !!!!!

Soooo. Yesterday's new cut was total disaster. The guy who has been doing my do for over two years cut it for me and he cut in layers. NOT GOOD! Tried to wear a baseball cap today to cover it for work and even THAT didn't improve matters. Bought a clipper, bought a very nice wig (scored a 15% medical discount...YES!) Went home and Sweetie sheared the sheep, kissed my now bald head and said he was sorry. I LOVE that man beyond belief! So, let the healing (and growing) begin!

Oh, and based on what I witnessed today at the Gallery of Wigs, I'm ever so very grateful that my hair issue was only caused by nutrition issues.

I am only 2 weeks out so my hair hasn't become an issue. I was told to get shampoo that has biotin in it and that will help. I guess it can't hurt either. Lol

Spotz - I'm so sorry!! Just a thought, but you might want to check in with your surgeons office. It's unusual for your hair to be falling out at this point. Check and see if there's something else going on.

Spotz, I'm sorry the hair cut didnt work out - that's so disappointing. I've recently read on another support line that people are having great success using the vaginal cream Monistat. From what I've read they are mixing it with oil and massaging it into their scalps before bed and washing in the morning. Try a google search and you will be able to find more details on how to do it. Also I agree with Senecagrl there has to be a reason for your hair loss at this far out. If youve had other surgery recently that might account for it too. I recently had surgery on my shoulder and started losing hair again. Good luck

I don't think I'm still having loss, just a matter of no new growth to replace what was lost as the expected result of RNY. Knowing what I know now as far as biotin supplementation in the correct amount, I expect a complete turn around in about 6 months or so. The remaining damage was due to over processing, ie color and highlights. After the bypass, I had the expected hair loss beginning at about 4 months out. It slowed at around 9 months out. I used Nioxin products since just before RNY to help with the appearance of healthy hair. Products applied only help with manageability and appearance. The healthy part must come from the inside. Knowing the recommended dosage of biotin will help correct the new growth. I was WAY under what I should have been taking all along. Protein was and is not an issue here...I get at least 100-120 grams daily and have since the beginning. So important for overall health and healing!

I did have additional extensive surgery just this past Easter weekend, but epidural and twilight sedation was used, so no problems there with physical response of hair loss due to general anesthesia.

I do have a physical scheduled for the second week in January, so I'll have all my nutritional levels rechecked then just to be sure all's still good.

Just as a side note for those newbies following this thread and are worried about the loss...I had very very thick hair to start with, so having it "thinned" to a little less than half of what was there wasn't such a big deal. Having no re growth plus chemical damage...whole 'nuther story!

Was RNY worth it? Without a doubt!
