Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. Many of you have asked about PunkeyBear. And many different questions regarding her situation... I hesitate to post this because at one point didnt want her situation posted on the main thread as she was concerned her situation would scare off new folks, and more than anything she doesnt want that. So if you are reading this preop, know that there were/are MANY FACTORS coming into play with her story She says a great part of it had to do with 1) The health care she received at the Canadian hospital, 2) how they treated her like having RNY was a lousy choice to make 3) other medical conditions that she ended up with to ice the proverbial cake.
And Punkey, if you happen to pop in here and read this please please know that your DS mom here ONLY has positive intent in posting this! All these folks are so concerned for you and your wellbeing!! Know that this is posted with TONS of love for you and everyone here is cheering you on, praying for you, crossing toes and fingers, meditating etc for your recovery!

Punkey had RNY November of last year
A few weeks later she had pancreatitis. Then they found a stricture. Then at week 15 in the hosp. she had to have her pouch reconstructed due to all the other surgeries and such that had caused scar tissue. She got a feeding tube at that time. At this point, I think she was at surgery 5 Somewhere in here she also had surgery to fix a small intestine twist / herniation that she was sure was going to be the solution. End of Feb they told her her RNY was all good to go now and were now trying to figure out what other issues were going on First part of March she told me she had been given a feeding tube and they were looking at reconstructing her stomach again End of March she said they had scheduled her for yet another surgery for April 15th They sent her to a rehab type of place till surgery time so she could get stronger. At this point she said she had a bit more freedom than in the hosp and was even doing her own laundry She was back in her hometown during this time and nearer her family Then (It just seems to go on and on) she got a blood infection that made her very very sick and didnt know if she would be well enough for the surgery at this point
This is the last message I received from her on April 27th
They had to cancel the last surgery I was supposed to have because my kidneys shut down ..... I ended up dying twice was froze to preserve the brain and now I'm waiting to see the fate of my heart! (Surgery or no surgery) After that they can fix my stomach!! What a journey!
I know she does not come on here real often, but I have of course sent her messages to see how things are going. She has been in the hospital (or rehab center) for somewhere around 5 or 6 months now, something I cannot even imagine!!
She IS GOING TO GET BETTER!! She has to!

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...

Becca, again thank you for keeping us updated! DS is such a wonderful place to meet people and give/receive support, and this is proof!
The reference about Canadian healthcare came from a Canadian, PunkeyBear... And I am sure, after many months in the hospital feeling she was not receiving adequate care, she made a blanket statement... I am sure many of us have been in a situation where we are exasperated to know ends and make a blanket comment that may not truly be how we see things in the light of day so to speak...
So, please know that I know nothing of, nor have an opinion on the Canadian health care system. Heck! Our system here in the states often lacks... who would I be to cast stones! :)
As for PunkeyBear... considering all shes been thru... I'd again venture to guess it was a comment made out of frustration.
Her biggest DESIRE is for newbees to NOT be scared off of surgery because of her situation....
