Fortunately I have never had diabetes, but several other family members do. I can only answer this question based on what my doctor told me about the subject. Post op you can only eat food which has 10 grams of sugar or less. It's the reason they say if you were a diabetic before, you are not afterwards because you body cannot physically handle more sugar than the 10 grams. If you do, dumping is the result. I have also never had that lovely experience because I understand it can be quite awful.

I never had it either, however, post-op I feel like a diabetic due to drastic blood sugar lows, having to monitor my levels and keep glucose tabs on hand. Kind of bass-ackward, huh? I do hear a lot of people saying they're off their diabetic medications usually within the first month post-op.

This is one of the main reasons I am having the RNY as opposed to the lap band.
When they rearrange your intestines, it changes your hormones. This is the main reason that type 2 diabetes improves. Later, when you lose weight, that reinforces the improvement, as fat stores estrogen, which causes the problem in the first place. Once we lose the fat, there is less estrogen.

Hello. I was on insulin injections 4x daily. (3 with meals, and one nighttime shot). I am now permanently off all of my meal time injections and take only 1/2 dose of my nighttime. The goal is to have me weaned off all insulin by 6 months. My doctor says I will never be "cured" as I will always have to check my blood sugars, but to stop having to give myself shots everyday will be so wonderful!!! I had my surgery June 2nd -2011. :)

I have been diabetic for about 10 years taking oral medication glipizide each morning. After surgery I did not need the medication. Had surgery 5/31/11. I check my blood sugar twice a day for monitoring purposes. My surgeon reminds me that I am not cured but it is in remission. My blood sugar has been great. Will have the a1c next month. I have never felt better :o)

i am new to this and was just suggested the surgery by the doctor, i am on 6 needles and 3 pills a day right now and he says i could and should be right off the needle if i have this done. So far by these groups i am getting alot of positive feedback. This will open alot of doors for me because i am a truck driver living on a border city (windsor ontario) and by the medical standards , i cannot drive in the usa if on the needle.Also with arthritiss , this should help.

I had been on both oral medication and then was switched to insulin shortly before my surgery. I was also on blood pressure medication and high cholesterol medication. I no longer take anything and no longer do insulin. My blood sugars run under 90 right now, but I am only about 2.5 weeks out from surgery.

I was type two for two years (diagnosed) prior to surgery. I went off at four months, but they told me I likely could have gone off the meds week 1. Never more thankful for this surgery than when I reflect on this miracle. I took metformin pills.

Thanks everyone for giving me this info. I am on a insulin pump and was getting a ton of insulin the most my dr has ever seen! I am now only getting 70 units in 24 hours and only bolus for any sugar over 300 while I am on my pre weight loss surgery all liquid diet! I am sure my a1c will be going up a bit but I can't bottom out and not eat something to correct it. I just adjusted it last night and will bolus for anything greater than 250 and keep dropping to get a tighter control. Insulin is a growth hormone and it is sooo hard to loose weight with it! I gained 100 lbs side getting the pump and am praying to get rid of it! I hope I can follow your lead!

I WAS type2 diabetic for about 20 yrs on 3 oral meds and I left the hospital OFF ALL OF THEM. This is the amazing results of this surgery. Also my A1c 2 wks post op was 5.7 down from an average of 7.8. My pcp is truly impressed.

I was taking Metformin, Glipizide and Actos.

I have been a diabetic for 19 years I am on humalog 3 times per day and i shot of lantus each night. plus metformin twice a day this is why my Dr recommended the surgery. My sister JoyJoy 51 who had the surgery 7/6/10 was on all these also . she was off all med immediately after surgery. She is 1 year post op and has not had to take any meds since.
I am so encouraged by this. She has done fantastic since. Hoping for the same results.

I had diabetes pre-op and was on a combination of oral and injectable meds (metformin, glimipiride, victoza, and novolog insulin). However, I had what my surgeon likes to call an "on table remission" and I haven't had a drop of insulin (or had to take any of my other meds) since I got out of the hospital.

I am almost 3 months post right now and I will be having blood drawn to test my A1C in the next week, but I feel pretty confident that it should be well within normal levels since I've been checking my blood sugars fairly regularly still and haven't been having any highs.

I had type 2 diabetes and took two oral meds to "control" it. But they didn't control it--it kept changing on me. My doctor put me off the diabetes meds on the day after surgery, and I haven't taken them since. My blood glucose readings came down very slowly, but they did come down. At six months, my a1c test was in the normal, non-diabetic range. I'm officially no longer diabetic.

I'm also off of Lipitor and Nexium, Blood pressure meds have been cut in half and will likely be eliminated soon.

I've been diabetic for 7 years now, started out with pills and graduated to insulin - 4-5 injections a day. Had surgery July 19. No more insulin now for two days!
