I'm also an RNY. Initially I was going lap band but during the six months it became obvious to me that RNY had a better success rate and addressed my hunger issues better. I did not consider the sleeve so can't help you there.

I had to choose between the two . I know both are neck and neck i choose the gastric because if figure if im going to do it im going to do it big lol

Went in thinking I wanted the sleeve but my Dr. convinced me that the success rate was better with RNY, also it has the consequence of dumping. It may not seem like a benefit, but I know that if I could cheat I obviously would or I wouldn't have needed surgery in the first place. I don't regret my decision, no matter what you choose it'll be right for you.

Moes I am right there with you. I'm going to my seminar the 31st. I'm so excited! I too would feel the urge to cheat so I am planning on the RNY myself. Just got to get to the point where I am sitting down with the surgeon to figure it all out. I'm so nervous!

I wanted sleeve but you can get away with eating everything. This would not be good for me. I and my doc choose RNY because you lose weight faster if you eat the wrong things your body will remind you. Win win for me. Just select what you think you will benefit mo. From. Good luck

First going in, I was going for the lap band. Then after the seminar, I changed my mind. Cause I learned that weight loss was a lot slower with the band. So I chose and had done the RNY gastric bypass. My surgeon's assistant, the nutritionist an even the psychiatrist told me the bypass is a lot better because you lose so much quicker. As someone mentioned in a post in this thread.. if I was going to do it, I might as well go all out. Had mine done Dec 14, 2012 an I havent regretted it yet.

when i had my surgery years ago..the surgeon i chose was only doing the band and rny...i figgered...being as i was paying for it myself i would go with the RNY...because the lap band is so easy to cheat with..(you can change the adjustment yourself)...and being a male i knew i might cheat...so i went big time too....glad i did...as far as the sleeve...it was not an option when i had mine

I'm in Canada and the only surgery covered by the government is rny. So I didn't have a choice.

But I'm happy with the rny. I like the idea of the malabsorption.

I had to choose too. I asked my surgeon what would be best for me in the end and he said sleeve. I didn't have any diabetes or high blood pressure. I didn't want to deal with vitamin defi. you can have with RNY with malabsorption.
The sleeve isn't messing with connecting and reconnecting your bowel and other parts of your gut too. More and more people are having the sleeve due to the insurance co covering it now.
There isn't much difference in amount of weight lost between the RNY and Sleeve either it is more based on how much weight you need to loose in the first place. The larger the person is, the faster the weight will come off. I weighed 270 on 2/1/12 and lost 47 pounds pre op. I weight 223 on surgery day, 6/11/12 today I weigh 147. I have made my surgeon's goal a couple months ago but I want to get to 130-140 for my 5'4" height.
Ask your surgeon if you aren't for sure. That is what I did. I was leaning towards the sleeve anyways and when he would recommend the sleeve that was the deciding point for me.

BTW-the sleeve has been done for years but was part of two part operation. On people who were very obese they would do the sleeve surgery and then after they had lost some weight they would go back and do the RNY. But many of these people were happy with the sleeve and decided not to have the 2nd surgery, RNY so that is why there is only about 5-6 years of tracked data on this but the sleeve has been done longer than that but they didn't start tracking data till about 5-6 years ago on it.

RNY. Did my research, felt confident that it's been around for many years. Recommended by my surgeon, psych and my gyn. I like sweets and need a tool that will keep me away from them!!! I haven't dumped yet and don't intend to (unless it by mistake.) K

I had the sleeve because I believe that the sleeve is safer then the band. I did some homework.

I chose RNY, the rate of complications with the band was too high for me to consider, the sleeve didn't offer me enough restriction, and the rate of failure was also to high for my liking. I am so happy I chose the RNY, I was on insulin before the surgery and within 48 hours after surgery I no longer needed insulin, my fastings are all coming back normal (in the low 90's) my high blood pressure is now low and normal. The beneftis of this surgery are so worth it. I would do it all over again if I had to.
Do your research and make sure you're comfortable with your decision. Good luck!
