Welcome to the group Becca. I had RNY and decided this because of the amount of weight I had to loose. I went in thinking I wanted the sleeve but my Dr and I discussed it and he thought I would have better success with the RNY. Discuss the pros and cons of both one on one with your Dr. Do your research first and go in with a list of questions. Good luck.

I went for RNY because I wanted and needed the restriction. I also wanted that fear of dumping to keep me in check. I had almost 200lbs to loose down 120lbs.

I chose the RNY because I have a lot of weight to lose and I liked the stats of reducing my other medical concerns. My cousin had the sleeve done and she is about 100 pounds lighter than I am. She still has the success but she also didn't have all my medical conditions. Talk with your surgeon about your specific concerns and go with it.

Hi, I chose RNY. At 240 lbs I guess I'm considered a "light weight" however there is a very strong history of type II diabetes in my family. My surgeon (and I agree) that RNY is the best one to prevent becoming diabetic. Monday is my day :) Good luck with your journey. Kathy

The center here offered three choices, RnY, lapband or sleeve. I chose the sleeve for the malabsorption issues with the vitamins with the RnY, and we live 45 miles away from the surgeon so the lapband would involve a lot of travel for adjusting. There is also the issue of the port slipping, a higher chance of infection, and even erosion caused by the band itself. The sleeve seemed best for me.

Hi becca! I opted for RNY. At 5'4" and 240 at my first meeting with my surgeon, I knew myself pretty well. I did not want a foreign object in my digestive system, the hassles of getting off work and having adjustments made. I didn't find the idea of having a port lodged in my tummy muscles just under the shin appealing. I knew how my relationship with food was and that I wanted the strongest medical intervention possible, complete with the strong possibility of dumping syndrome as a deterrent from binge eating.

I have taken Bariatric Fusion vitamins religiously from a month before my surgery. My blood work is excellent. I've had zero complications, no problems with reintroducing food. I'm off all medications, with thyroid meds being the exception. And the dosage of that one has been reduced twice in the past month. My energy level is good, no more sleeping 17 hours a day! Prior to surgery it was high blood pressure, degenerative disk disease pain, sleep apnea, numbness in right outer thigh, bi-polar type II symptoms, vit D deficiency, gerd and family history of type II diabetes knocking at my door. All gone!

I'm 15 months out and and absoultely positive I made the right choice for managing my morbid obesity. Not one regret!

I am of the same mind regarding the lap band as what is expressed here. Also, If I am going to do this, I am not messing around! LOL!

I will work on being patient (an effort for me!) and wait to see what my doc says.

I also have been digging (researching) daily! It helps me to feel informed as possible

It is not quite accurate to say that you won't have vitamin issues. There can be deficiencies with any type of WLS.

For me i did not want a foreign body so lap was out. also i wanted the severity of the rny. i wanted to not want food and i wanted to lose all my weight.

also - check with your insurance. many will still not cover the sleeve because it is newer. the RNY is considered by many docs the "gold standard".

When first considering this surgery thing I looked in on it and did some research. I really wanted to get the sleeve for several reasons one of which was the vitamins. The other was the fact they took off the part of your stomach that had the hormone that made you hungry. However, my insurance did not cover that surgery. So with the study s I did I chose the RNY surgery.

I was originally going to do the sleeve because that is what is normally recommended for people who are on chronic steroids and that is what causes their weight gain which I have been on chronic steroids for most of my life. So we were going to go with that but I ended up having the RNY because I have a hiatal hernia and that is contra-indicative for the sleeve surgery. So I am almost 8 weeks out (Tuesday will be 8 weeks out) and I have no regrets with my decision. My surgeon was very helpful with helping me make my decision and why I should do a certain surgery over another...just discuss this with your doctor and you will be able to decide what is best for your situation.

Hi, I had RNY on 8/21/12. I went with this surgery because for one my insurance only covered this and lap band, and I knew I didn't want lap band. I have not had any problems and all my blood work comes back good.

I had a choice of all three possibilities RNY, sleeve or lap band. My surgeon indicated that soon their Center of Excellence would stop lap band because of poor long-term results and complications. This made just a personal choice between the other two. I have been very worried about developing diabetes and the RNY is supposed to be most effective in reversing or preventing diabetes. I know people who ave. been successful with both, so I'm sure you'll determine which is best for you.

I chose the RNY over the sleeve because I wanted the strongest tool possible. The sleeve only provides restriction, while RNY provides both restriction and malabsorption. I wanted to dump when I ate foods I shouldnt (although Ive since discovered not all RNY patients dump and some sleevers do). Also, I have a history of GERD and RNY tends to be better at resolving that (I havent had GERD since I had my RNY). With RNY, you can't take NSAIDS (like asprin or Ibuprophine). I'm allergic to them, anyway, so I wasn't giving up anything.

I'm very happy with my choice.

I chose the sleeve and am doing very well. My Dr was open minded but we felt the sleeve was the best for me. I have no complications and amDramDropenping weight just as fast as my rny friends.
