If it were me, I'd try the NyQuil caplets. There's not the alcohol or sugar that's in the liquid NyQuil. Also there are other options that don't have as much alcohol or sugar in them. I'm not sure what it is now, but NyQuil used to be 25% alcohol. That's 50proof. That's 8 proof stronger than Kahlua and 10 proof stronger than schnapps. Go to the pharmacist and just tell them you need a low alcohol, low sugar cold remedy. Again they'll probably recommend the caplets, but there are some liquid cold remedies with no alcohol and with little to no sugar or artificial sweeteners.

I had a really bad cough almost a month out and was afraid I would rip my incisions because I wasn't far out from surgery and was still in the healing process. I waited and waited until I couldn't handle it anymore, because I was scared to take anything too. I called my surgeons office and they said as long as the cough syrup doesn't have any alcohol in it, it's usually ok to take as directed. I used Robotusin non-alcohol. Helped me a little but come to find out I had come down with pneumonia so regular cough syrup wasn't cutting it.

NyQuil has acetominaphen (Tylenol) so we're okay -no aspirin/NSAIDS. If you stick with the recomended dose I doubt the proof matters - you're only taking 2 spoonsfull. I've taken it with no ill effects. If what you have (or end up with) is that nagging cough that won't go away even after the cold goes try Delsym. I'm 18 months out and got my first bad cold about a year out. No problems.

FYI, All NSAIDS are not strictly forbidden. For almost all men 50 or over (not sure about women) the GP's and the Bariatric doctors recommend taking a low dose (baby) aspirin daily as part of their heart health. They are coated (enteric) aspirin so they don't dissolve in your pouch but lower in your intestine, but most doctors mandate one baby aspirin a day for men 50 and over regardless of GBS.

I took NyQuil caplets without any problems.

When I get a cough that bad, I see the primary care person. Usually my coughs are bad when I have a sinus infection. Often, I have to go on antibiotics. She gives me Phenergyn (sp) with codeine syrup (not much but enough to get a few nights rest. I do not know if phenergyn has alcohol in it or not; something I need to ask. You can' t get well if you can't rest. Be sure to drink lots of fluids. Hope you get well real soon. Take good care.

I had a terrible sinus infectin/cold this week. Used nyquil/dayquil without issues.

Tylenol bases and the caplets don't have alcohol or sugar as mentioned before, so you should be ok.

Also Tylenol cold and flu would be ok too.
