Once again... I've been thinking.... Ya know, about all the head stuff...
One of the 'fears' I have is trying to find a constructive way to replace food. I KNOW I am going to replace it... The key here is with what...?
Something I struggle with, is being still. It seems I have to be doing something.... ALWAYS! I don't mean like cleaning house (I wish!), I just mean with my hands, or mind, or something! And over the years, especially in the evenings... my something has been to eat!
When I was little, my grandpa use to tell me "Becky, every time your elbow bends, your mouth fly's open!" I was like 7 or 8...!
So... as I ramble on... This term at school I am taking a meditation and relaxation class (has turned out to be 'nap class' LOL! But I am taking full advantage of the downtime) and I was telling my PSY eval doc about it.
He said... WLS folks must learn to be still, in their own space, in their own head... And to be ok with it. That often we overeat, or find a unhealthy replacement for food, because we don't know how to do this and we need a diversion of sorts from dealing with our emotions, etc.
He went on to say that learning to appreciate meditation is an AWESOME way to find this internal peace (? my words, not his, but seems to be the right thing to call it) that many of us struggle with.
dolebrst mentioned in her earlier post about emotions coming up that she found disconcerting ... I so get that! I get that because I have learned over the years to eat instead of feel... or think... or take care of my needs...
So, cognitive recalibration... after much rambling, I finally am going to make my point! LOL! :)
I dusted off my MP3 player that I had downloaded many meditation and affirmations items to... and am listening again! Now I know some of you are going "ugggh"... I get that, its not for everyone... but I know I need all the help I can get to find my "happy place" and to make my head strong... and to help me be ok with being still, in my own head....
Most of mine came from amazon... And many were free or like 99 cents. I did buy a few that were like 8 bucks, but I am here to tell you they have NOTHING on the free or cheap ones overall.
Below is a link... Ya just might be surprised at the help they provide! When I first started this, about a year or so ago, it helped me so much! Then... we moved, I started going to the "big girl college", life got crazy... and I let it slip. But I have started listening again... On my bus ride to and from school. I am also going to get back in the routine of using 20/30 min a day for the meditation ones. Oh, and I often listen at night, they have ones to help you sleep, etc.

Good way to use your time! I am hopeful that I too will be a walker again. RIght now, my walks are very short due to pain, but that should change, hopefully not long after surgery!
I have faith that you will do great...
...Anyway if I feel that I need that oral fixation, I know were not supposed to chew gum, so I cleared it with my Doc first he said 1/2 small peice wasn't going to kill me, and I also find myself sucking on SF lifesavers if its really bad. Occasionally my husband will catch me sort of chewing on the end of a pen, and sometimes if I think I am hungry but I know I really am not I will chew on ice chips. My Nut considers it part of clear liquids, so instead of drinking I am eating it. I know not everyone can have that option, as not everyone can handle cold things...Best Wishes
Also, to keep your hands busy in the evenings, I recommend crochet, knitting, embroidery or some other sort of needlework. Works like a charm. :)
