Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. If you are considering gastric bypass or have had it, join the community where we share our experiences and find support.
Congrats on your victory!
I've been stalled for a long long time (13 months post-op) and am really afraid to add too many calories back in. How many calories are you up to?
You asked about my upped calories... I have eaten about 1100-1200 per day for the last week. This is up from about 900. My carbs were averaging about 50-70, they are up to about 100.
What the surgeon said is I should never eat less than 1000 and more like 1200. For me to have 100 grams of carbs per day, and on my heavy work out days, more like 120. (this is whole carbs, not NET).
I am 5'8" tall (use to be 2 " taller!)... which is not real tall... but she said I was on the large statue end of the spectrum because of the size of my shoulders, hands, head (lol! I have a big head!), long arms...etc. I also do fairly physical work 12+ hours a week, walk on average 3 hours a week, I do strength training, as well as ride the bike at the gym for about an hour a couple different times per week. This is not a huge workout compared to some, but its huge for me in comparison to what I was doing a very short time ago!
She went on to explain that everyone is different in what works for them (of course), but that often people get hung up in eating too little. That we should find the highest numbers possible to consume during our wt loss phase because that means when we hit maintenance we will be able to eat even a bit more, which is important because for many of us, at some point our hunger comes back. And in the long term, this is good because 1) if we ever have to lose a few, we won't have to drop our calories to like 600 a day to do it, and same with carbs... the higher we can consume of the healthy variety, if we need to lose again later, we have more room to play with. 2) it allows us to better nourish our bodies. She also reminded me how important the right carbs were for our brains and overall physical health.
and farmgirl,
I hear that from many! I too was keeping mine real low. I know some who keep their carbs to as low as 20 or 30 per day... which is what they have to do... my surgeon said when they get hung up and need to drop lower, there is very little wiggle room. I am not downing low carb by no means, it is what works and is still important to keep in check... and of course, as we all know, the type of carbs consumed plays a huge role too!
What I have noticed is I still focus on protein, and my intake is now up to around 110-120 grams a day. And my 'extra' carb choices are still things like more fruit, maybe a whole grain flat out (usually a 1/2), or some oatmeal. I still don't buy bread... I am afraid to! If I thought I could have a slice every so often, I would buy some high quality bread and put it in the freezer for me... but I use to be a toast addict :) And I am afraid of a relapse!
Overall, I am just keeping a close eye on my weight over the next few weeks... I am still freaked out this is working! Happy about it, but still fearful I'll start gaining :) Funny how our minds work... (sorry to ramble... I am avoiding homework! LOL!)
I can see this last dash for the finish line of my goal weight is going to make me really work for every pound. 42 pounds to go until goal, so so close.
Great job Becca!!
Nice job!
