I had rny because I live in Canada and that is the only one the government will pay for.

I do experience mild dumping if I eat sugar (like cookies).

I was 305lbs to start and now weigh 169lbs at almost 10 months.

I don't know all that much about the sleeve. From people who have had it on this website it seems like it is usually the surgery of choice for people who start out heavier (400lbs+), but I don't know why.

One of the things that I like best about rny is the malabsorption. It really helps with weight loss and maintenance. I don't know if the sleeve has malabsorption.

I chose RNY over the sleeve because I am diabetic and the statistics for diabetics to no longer need medication and insulin. And I'm proud to be one of those stats that hasn't needed meds since 48 hours after surgery. I also chose RNY for it's long term success rate over the sleeve. I've also had my children and am no longer of child bearing age. I'ver heard of people getting the sleeve because they plan on having children and you're not as malnourished as RNY.

I think we've all gone through an episode of dumping. But we learn from our mistakes and once it happens we do everything possible to avoid it happening again. It's only happened to me once.

I had RNY because of the dumping and malabsorption components of the surgery. I have experienced dumping due to not following the rules early on. The first few months is a learning time about the new anatomy and how it works. I had a small "oops" by eating some refried beans, which I had not measured out and had eaten too quickly. Not a pleasant experience, but definitely a learning one!

After the pouch "teaches" you how to treat it and you really learn that, the dumping issue is not such an issue. The only time I feel close to dumping is if something I eat has unexpected sugar, too many carbs, too many calories or too much fat. 99% of the time I know how foods are prepared and can avoid the offenders. I'm 14 months out and am very happy with my decision to have the RNY over any of the other options.

I choose the RNY because I'm bad at portion control and that surgery is good for me. Also it was the first surgery ever done and the most done so I feel it's the best. Before RNY had become a weight loss surgery they were doing this surgery for other things such as for removing ulcers which my grandfather had done. That was over 55yrs ago.

Oh and my surgery is in 2.5wks nov27th

I guess I am the only one weighing in on the sleeve. When visiting my surgeron I was first evaluated as to what would be the best procedure for me. My choices were the sleeve or the lap band. I knew that the lap band was not for me, it required to many visits to get to a normal place with many adjustments. I choose the sleeve... I was worried about the malabsorption. With the sleeve vitiams and nutrients are also absorbed. I know that this will take work, and I must watch portion contronl. While I don't have a pouch I do have a small stomach. And I am learning to listen to it. I do also experience mild dumping .. when I eat to fast and things are too spicy, or trying something to early. I know that this is a lifestyle change and it is going to cause me to be alert of what I am eating and how much I am eating. I don't regret it at all.

I ended up having the RNY on 10/16 because I had a hiatal hernia....which is contraindicate of the sleeve surgery. I was going to have the sleeve because my weight gain is from chronic steroids from my severe asthma. Therefore, when I had the stomach upper GI series they found the hernia so I could not have the sleeve. There was not much difference besides that I will lose more weight with the sleeve. My doctor informed me that I would be able to try to get pregnant once my body stabilized with the RNY so it really didn't make much difference to my choices.

I had sleeve surgery on October 16 and I chose it due to the issues with RnY and malabsorption. I did not want the lap band due to all the adjusting and possible complications with the port slipping and erosion from the band itself. My surgeon and family doc both agreed with my choice. I had to go through 6 months of nutrition and exercise counseling before trying to get insurance approval. I would do it all again in an instant. Since starting in January with the first of the nutritionist appointments I have lost 96 pounds!

Micheal said it best. I had my sleeve on the Oct 26th. I've lost 14 pounds. The bypass scared the crap out of me. I know a girl who did fine her first year then started gaining all the weight back and has malabsorption issues.I know a number of people with the band and they have a long list of issues. My vote is for the sleeve!

I had the sleeve on Sept. 6th & I am down 41lbs. I chose the sleeve over RNY because after all the research & going through classes for 12 weeks I knew that RNY was not for me. It just did not sit well with my brain & emotions and I just did not want the doctor going in & messing around with my plumbing. I think the biggest issue for me will be striking to making good food choices over the long run. It is something I am going to take day by day & make this work. Overall I do not regret my decision especially since my pants are falling off of me & I am told how beautiful I look. Those are the NSV that just make you smile & feel good all over! I forgot to note that diabetic sleeve patients usually leave the hospital non-diabetic after surgery and that I had my hiatal hernia repaired while in surgery. Best decision EVER!
