So my friends want to take me out tomorrow to celebrate my surgery. They know I won't be drinking again so want to go out while we can. Is it safe to drink before having surgery next week!!??

In my opinion NO!!! - my doctors told me that it is best to stop at least 2 weeks if not a month prior to surgery. I know you want to have a good time and enjoy your friends but it is not worth it to indulge at this point in my opinion. Once you started your high protein/liquid diet all bets are off for going off kilter in prep for your surgery. I don't know what others have done but in preparation for my surgery I gave up drinking when the ball dropped on new years this past December and I didn't have my surgery until April. I'll be curious myself to see what others did and what other surgical teams have said. Enjoy your time out and I will see you on the losers bench soon.

Ask your Dr. I know the purpose of the pre diet is for the liver, and alcohol is not known for being good to the liver. :)

Thank you for your posts. I actually do not have a pre-op diet. But I have personally chosen to stick to a high protein/low fat diet.

Oh shoot...hit send too quickly...I wanted to add that by drinking I don't mean taking shots till 3 in the morning...lol..,I mostly was thinking a glass or two of red wine? :)

I hope I don't offend anyone but this was my experience.... My doc told me no drinking 48 hours prior to surgery... I know the liver can cause issues during surgery and alcohol can affect the liver...

PERSONALLY, and this is only MY opinion.... I would go and celebrate... But I would NOT get drunk.. I might have a drink or two and then put the drink down officially...

You can check with your docs to see what they recommend and follow their advice... Good luck....

I have no knowledge of the medical impact of going out for cocktails but I would certainly give my doctor a call and check. Then if he/she gives the okay, I would go out and toast to your new journey!

The surgery is not the end all. You can drink after surgery. It will be a while and will need to be in moderaton because it will affect you differently post op.
I would avoid drinking alcohol before surgery. Someone mentioned the liver and alcohol affects your liver. You want to make sure it stays small so that the surgery will go smoothly. But you should also check with your doctor
