Thanks to Jerry I received a great deal of info re: acet...etc, however, I have recently been wondering if we must always everafter rely on acet. (tylenol type) products for pain relief. I am just about a year out and wondered if on some (rare) occasions we can take any of the other products. It used to be that one nsaid product would take care of a recurring headache and I wouldn't need anything else for a long time (one dose). I don't mean recurring daily but when the headache comes, nothing much would touch it.
I suspect that is the general concensus....as much as we would all prefer otherwise....
In practice however, this can be a highly individual question; sometimes even requiring you to take responsibility for coordinating between doctors. Quick example.
My surgeon said "NO NSAIDS". My cardiologist said "you MUST take one adult aspirin (an NSAID) per day". It took a couple of weeks and several phone calls to both offices to build a consensus. Yes, it was frustrating as both offices were insistent and their positions were contradictory. The final result is that yes, I DO take one adult aspirin per day. But I also will be on Prilosec (omeprazole) for the remainder of my life to protect my stomach from the potential hazards of this NSAID.
Bottom line is that GBS patients should NOT take NSAIDS.. There may be exceptions (as was my case) but ANY such exceptions should only be determined in direct coordination with your bypass surgeon. You also need to take responsibility for informing any physician you see that you've had GBS and are not suppose to take NSAIDS. Use a single pharmacy if possible and see if the pharmacist can flag NSAIDS for you so as to provide another layer of protection.
Always protect the pouch. It's your little bag of gold.
