Gambling Addiction & Recovery Support Group
Compulsive gambling is an urge or addiction to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. A preferred term among many professionals is problem gambling, as few people described by the term experience true compulsions in the clinical sense of the word. Problem gambling often is defined by whether harm is experienced by the gambler or others rather...
I only occasionally go to a 12 step meeting now, but I use the 12 steps principles and I attend a same sex support group through the gambling addiction counseling center where I underwent treatment. Having a support group is huge help in many ways. (Another conversation) I hope this gives some insight as to why that is the recommendation. You may want to try asking the question on the GA site, as I am expressing my best thoughtful opinion/educated guess.
Brain fog ... to me its like being all hungover from going on an all nighter drunk ... a bunch of booze still rolling around in my gutt and the effects of it in my head.
My head and brain were focused on the casino .. winning money, losing money, getting there, covering my losses.. lying, cheating, stealing, etc, etc. ... My life and thoughts were consumed with this horrible thinking and behavior.
While I am only a little over 2 months gamble free ... my head is STILL fogged up with some of the above mentioned thoughts. And I know t hat its just gonna take time to replace the fog with better stuff! And, work on my part too ... meetings, coming here, praying, exercising, work, socializing in different places/enviornments. I have to fill the hole that the casino use to fill.
Again , welcome! Really glad you are here. I have found a great bunch of Folks here who have been really helpful to me .. and for this I am grateful :-)
I can't answer your question. I don't know the reason.
What I will tell you is to remember that progress occurs in shades of grey. A lot of addicts, myself included, have a tendency to see everything in black and white.
If you can do 90 meetings in 90 days, great. But if you can't, and can only go to 45 meetings in 90 days, or 10 meetings in 90 days, or even 1 meeting in 90 days, that is still progress. ANY time you spend in a meeting, with a gambling counselor, on this forum, or staying away from the casino is progress. It doesn't have to be perfect.
I am 202 days in, and I have not attended any GA meetings. I have, however, seen a therapist bi-weekly during this time, and weekly for the first few weeks.
Hope this helps.
You are not alone.
We only have to get through today.
