Gambling Addiction & Recovery Support Group
Compulsive gambling is an urge or addiction to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. A preferred term among many professionals is problem gambling, as few people described by the term experience true compulsions in the clinical sense of the word. Problem gambling often is defined by whether harm is experienced by the gambler or others rather...
40 years of compulsive gambling eventually crushed me.....However, I would not have learned how to become my own friend, how to be grateful for each day, how to calm my anxiety, how to be still and let the mud settle, how to engage in art again, or realized what I really value in life had I not hit such a rock bottom in this addiction. It got me really ready to make an all out, scared I'm gonna die, effort and invest fully in therapy and getting and staying abstinent. I have achieved more happiness in the last two years than I've had in my 60+ years put together before quitting gambling. I have more authentic friends, interests, hobbies, and quiet time than I have ever had. I have the most positive outlook of my life and with the help of a good therapist and many other tools, I finally turned off the critical voice in my head that used tell me how dumb, stupid, and worthless I was, almost constantly. The people that I care about and care about me are important to me, artwork is important, peace and calm is important, times of no anxiety is important, enjoying nature is important, taking care of myself so I can continue to enjoy it is important. Life is too good for me now to risk it all to go back to a living HELL! No, I won't gamble today.
Hang in there - it can get better than ever - got to get past the first three or four months of abstinence for the dopamine levels to get normalized.
I've tried quitting several times. Coming back to this group and reading your posts helps a great deal. Thank you again and please continue to share your thoughts or experiences here.
