No adult can control another, short of at gunpoint. (Which will only last while they are in the sights) The only person, besides children, whom we can control is ourself.
If I were married to an active gambling addict that had already caused much grief, anxiety, and loss of assets I would make sure I had a separate bank account, for starters, I might alert our mortgage holder not to loan my spouse anything without BOTH our signatures and I might file for divorce, (and freeze all assets), contingent on them getting help.
